Top 5 iPhone Web apps of 2007

iphone-facebook.jpg2008 should see a blizzard of innovative native applications for Apple’s iPhone, once the SDK gets into the hands of developers. Yet 2007 has already seen some innovative and usable web applications, accessible through the iPhone’s Safari browser. Here’s our pick of the bunch:

1. Facebook (http://iphone.facebook.com)
We already spend far too much time on the full Facebook website, but its iPhone-friendly version takes the addiction mobile. It does a great job of boiling down the key features of Facebook, particularly the connectivity, in a usable interface that’s perfect for finger-jabbing.

2. BBC Podcasts (http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts)
The Beeb was quick off the mark to develop for iPhone, starting with this radio podcasts site offering streaming shows from its archive. You can navigate by station, genre or an A-Z list, and although you have to be on a Wi-Fi network for it to work, it’s slick and entertaining stuff.

3.  Digg iPhone Application (http://digg.com/iphone#_stories)
If you’re an iPhone early adopter, chances are you’re fairly into your gadgets’n'gizmos. If so, Digg’s iPhone site will definitely appeal, providing a neatly stripped-down way to check out the latest stories on the popular social news site. Plus, there’s usually a good few iPhone stories high in the mix.

4. Typing Tutor for iPhone and iPod Touch (http://www.typingweb.com/)
Struggling to get to grips with the iPhone keyboard? You should spend a bit of time with this web application then - it provides instructions, and rates your touchscreen typing ability, with all manner of charts and stats to prove it.

5. The Rock Lighter (http://www.rocklighter.com/)
Okay, so this one’s a bit silly, given that it’s an animation of a  lighter, designed so that you can hold your iPhone up at gigs during those rawk ballad moments (the tagline is ‘Go to concerts? Don’t smoke? Like to ROCK?’). That said, we’re not sure we’d risk waving our precious iPhone in the air so that any passing crowdsurfer can nick it…
