Opera Mobile

The non-free, windows mobile-native version of the popular mobile web browser produced a great new version this year, adding Flash support, stability fixes
and a host of subtle enhancements to the mobile browsing experience that put Opera so far ahead of the mobile version of Internet Explorer that it is almost embarrassing.

Ok, you have to shell out $24 dollars once you have burned trhough the 10-day trial period, but if you do the mobile web it is worth every cent.

Google Maps for Windows Mobile

Google finally put Win Mobile users out of their Java misery by releasing a native verson of Google Maps for Mobile that brought a much faster, smoother interface and better integration with the OS.

Towards the end of the year, Google one-upped themselves by adding My Location - a great new ‘GPS-lite’ system based on transmitter proximity that allowed non-GPS equipped phones to use Google’s location-based searches.

TrackAxMobile

One of the few Windows Mobile apps that is really fun to use - TrackAxMobile is a wonderfully simple, yet surprisingly rich, video and audio mixing suite that fits in the palm of your hand.

Its a great way to make use of all the random video clips, photos and music track that you have on your phone.  Once you have assembled your masterpiece, us the apps uploading features to share it via YouTube or send it by email or MMS.

Sprite Mobile Backup 6.10

It’s not the most glamorous of apps, but if you use your Windows Mobile device for actual work or storing a lot of personal data then a backup solution is a must-have.  Sprite performs its dull but worthy task with aplomb and even lets you take a complete ‘image’ backup of your phone.

If you ever had to hard reset, you could squirt the entire contents of your phone back onto the hardware in a matter of minutes.  If you are an IT manager looking to roll out a lot of similar devices to your users, this could be an incredible time saver.

Microsoft Live Search

Microsoft’s new Live Search beta offers a comparable service to Google Maps.

It’s a matter of personal preference, really.  Google offer a trusted search brand and a universal client, but Live Search plays to the strengths of it’s host OS and offers voice searching and a smooth UI for its satellite imaging and location-based info.

Web pages linked to locale-searches are transcoded for mobile viewing, and it’s clear some real thought has gone into the ‘mobile’ side of the app.

That’s it for Christmas day - join us tomorrow as we pop indigestion tablets like smarties and present our top 5 picks in Handsets and Mobile Music for 2007.
