Nothing like a bit of doom mongering to perk up an otherwise completely typical Tuesday afternoon. Crack out the tin-foil hats because an astrological phenomenon may be about to cause some serious disruptions to life as we know it here on earth.
The beginning of an 11 year cycle of heightened solar activity could potentially affect power grids, military, civilian and airline communications, GPS signals and even, wait for it, mobile phones.
The source of the potential problems is an area of highly organized magnetic activity on the surface of the sun called a sun spot. Collections of theses in combination with solar storms are set to go bonkers over the next few years before a gradual decline after 2012. It’s a scary thought, not least because it might mean we here at Pocket Picks will be out of a job.
