O2 says that customers going into its high-street shops have multiplied threefold since it started selling the iPhone last November. Which as a useful statistic, frankly, is a bit useless. Of course people want to have a look at the iPhone, what with all the media hype around Apple’s handset. The real question is whether they’re then buying it.
O2 isn’t saying much about that latter question. The Independent floats the woolly suggestion that some of the people trampling into O2 stores “may have been tempted to replace their phone with a newer model anyway after seeing the functionality of Apple’s handset”, but nobody can be sure. They might’ve just been window shopping.
Of course, if O2’s salespeople are good, getting people into the stores is half the job done: chances are they’ll walk out with something, even if it’s not an iPhone. However, today’s news only shows there’s strong consumer interest in the iPhone: the jury’s still out on how it’s actually selling here in the UK.
