iPhone Web Apps No.10: iRovr

iphone-irovr.jpg

Now here’s an exciting application for iPhone. iRovr claims to be the first social network designed specifically for iPhone users, with a healthy element of Twitter and user-generated content sites thrown in to boot. It’s not based on an existing website either: go to www.irovr.com, and you only find the iPhone version.

You can sign up friends, and share photos, videos and bookmarks. Updating your profile can be done by various means, most of which involve emailing text or content to a set address, with your stuff then appearing on your profile. It might sound fiddly, but in practice it seems like something you’d soon get used to.

My only issue is the idea of an iPhone-specific social network in itself. Apple would doubtless love it if all my friends bought iPhones, but until they do, I’m going to have to use other sites to stay in touch with them (i.e. Facebook). Although iRovr is well designed and clearly has potential to grow, the risk is that it could be restricted to a clique of iPhone owners, which could hold it back from becoming truly popular.

Still, I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on it.
