Nokia unveils the N96 at Mobile World Congress

239385.jpgOk folks, this is the motherlode, the one we have all been waiting for, Nokia’s new flagship handset. Looking for all the world like a slightly bigger N82 the N96 is a much sleeker looking beast than its predecessor. The slider function has been given a tweak meaning that it is easier to control when playing games.

But the changes are more than just cosmetic with the most notable difference being the inclusion of 16GB of onboard storage. The inclusion of WLAN and HSDPA connectivity is hardly surprising and the addition of Nokia’s Maps application is similarly expected though very welcome, especially in conjunction with the built in aGPS.

On the media front the N96 is packing a DVB-H receiver for live TV broadcasts and includes an automatically updating program guide. There is also a direct line to the Nokia Video Centre as well as all of the Ovi goodies including music and media sharing. Various video popular video formats are supported out of the box such as Windows Media Video, MPEG4 and Flash Video. The 5 megapixel camera makes a return for the N96 and can take video at reportedly DVD like levels of quality.

All in all the N96 is looking like everything it ought to be. It isn’t a massive revision of the N95 but it certainly has enough new features and a lovely new form factor to justify its release. The N96 will cost 550 Euros (about £300+) and will launch in the third quarter of this year.
