Omnifone has announced at the Mobile World Congress that it is set to launch a new arm of its service called MusicStation Max which will be a direct to mobile unlimited music download service.
Not only that but the service is to be included with certain pre-licensed handsets as an in-built service. LG is the first company that will license MusicStation Max for a specific handset with said device set to land sometime in the first half of this year.
Apparently the first MusicStation Max devices will work with any 3G/HSDPA network, and will make use of a touch-screen user interface for navigating the download service. Nothing has been revealed about onboard storage yet but we are willing to bet that LG is at least thinking of including a chunk of in-built flash as opposed to just memory card support (maybe both).
The handsets will come on a 12-18 month contract that will encompass all of the data and subscription fees needed to download unlimited music (which will be eligible for transfer to a new handset when your contract runs out). There has been no word yet on how pricey this will be but if positioned on the right side of cheap, even the mighty iTunes might be in for some competition.
Very exciting stuff and quite a progressive step for mobile music services. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one.
