At least that’s the story according to a fresh study conducted by researchers at the Carnegie Mellon University which seems to suggest that talking on a mobile phone whilst driving could be as dangerous as driving drunk.
Indeed, via the use of brain imaging, the researches found that drunk drivers make similar mistakes to those who use mobiles while driving, often zig zagging out of their lanes. The results also indicated that mobile phone use reduces 37 percent of brain activity engaged in driving and also suggested that using voice activated or other hands free solutions is not enough to offset the danger.
Far be it from us to comment on science that we have no hope of understanding but though we can see how using a mobile while driving could be very dangerous, how is using a hands free kit different from talking to a passenger in the car? Undoubtedly there is a good reason so we’ll probably just take the boffins’ word as truth for now.
