28% of iPhone users say it’s replaced their laptop

iphone-in-hand1.jpgWhat’s that about the iPhone’s virtual keyboard being a bit rubbish? Not according to a bunch of iPhone owners surveyed by Rubicon Consulting. It found that 28% often carry their iPhone instead of a notebook computer. Although cynics might suggest that they do this at times when they don’t need to use a notebook computer.

Other findings in the survey: 33% of iPhone users have a second handset from another manufacturer, 75% say they’ve done more mobile web browsing since buying their iPhone, 40% of users say their iPhone has trouble displaying some websites they want to visit (i.e. anything making heavy use of Flash), and that half of iPhone users are under 30, while 15% are students.

How are students affording iPhones? Shouldn’t they be spending their money on baked beans and plaid shirts?

Interestingly, people with iPhones report that their monthly phone bills have actually risen by 24% - this is a US survey, so that equates to $228 a year. Based on that finding, Rubicon reckons that US operator AT&T Wireless is trousering an extra $2 billion a year thanks to selling Apple’s handset. O2 must be making that from overseas data roaming charges alone…
