Nokia unveils four new handsets for emerging makets

nokia5000_01_lowres.jpgThe industry focus right now seems to be the goings on in Las Vegas for the CITA Wireless event, but across the pond in an entirely different hemisphere, the Growing Together 2008 conference is underway in Johannesburg. Nokia has been in attendance today revealing four new handsets to help cement the company’s leadership in emerging markets.

But what of the actual handsets? Well there will be the Nokia 5000 sporting a 1.3 megapixel camera, QVGA display, FM radio and MP3 player. The Nokia 2680 which sounds like a scaled down version of the 5000; the Nokia 7070 Prism which is a stylish folding option with voice recorder and hands-free speaker and finally the Nokia 1680 Classic which is a camera focussed effort aimed at first time phone and digital camera owners.

All of the handsets are said to sport email and some music functionality and ought to help raise the standard in emerging markets. The idea behind the quartet is to offer a range of budget handsets but with progressively modern spec sheets. Couldn’t Nokia do the same with its entry level handsets over here?

The devices are expected to ship by late summer, retailing between £40-70 before applicable taxes or subsidies. Hit the jump for more pics.
