US handset firm Hop-on says it’s signed a deal to sell 10,000 of its disposable mobile phones in Europe with an unnamed distributor. The phones are expected to sell for 13 Euros (around £10.37), although for that price expect a bare-bones handset, to say the least.
The company says the first shipment is due within the next couple of months, and will herald the company’s expansion into Europe. However, it remains to be seen whether the idea of disposable phones will catch on. Hop-on has been touting the concept for years now, and got into a spot of bother in 2002 when the San Francisco Chronicle exposed the fact that samples sent out to journalists were actually low-end Nokia phones with the logo scratched off.
Hopefully the company has refined its own technology in the years since then. There are also legitimate questions around how eco-friendly the idea of disposable phones is, if they’re not 100% recyclable. Watch this space.
