Picture the iPhone in your mind’s eye - now try to imagine it’s exact opposite.
The HOP 1800 is that phone - with looks best described as ‘functional’ the new handset from Californian company Hop-On is designed to be the antithesis of Apple’s object of desire.
The 1800 has no screen, chunky keys and, er, that’s it. It will let you surf no websites whatsoever. You will not be able to listen to your music collection or stream video direct from the internet. There is no bundled photo management software due to it having no camera.
It will not help you remember appointments, or check emails. It won’t even let you send or receive text messages.
But you can dial numbers. And talk.
Still, $10 isn’t bad for a dual band GSM phone with 4 hours talk time. Think of it as retro chic.
According to Peter Michaels of Hop-On, “Though the iPhone is an amazing device, I challenge anyone to make a call faster than with the HOP1800.”
Well, yes - providing you have memorised or written down the number you want to dial, unless you plan on taking your real phone around with you to read contacts off its screen.
It’s a nice idea, although a ‘disposable’ plastic and integrated circuit device sounds like it is the opposite of environmentally friendly - something the company is trying to mitigate against by offering a $5 rebate for returned phones to encourage recycling.
