You don’t often think of huge companies as the most eco friendly of entities, which is why when a business the size of O2 pipes up with a claim that it is going to reduce its carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2020, people take notice.
It’s a tall order to set oneself and apparently O2 is already well on it’s way to meeting its goal. The company has pledged to invest nearly half a billion dollars in wind farms that will take care of about 25 percent of the company’s energy requirements by 2016, the largest investment of its kind by a non-power company in the UK.
Very impressive stuff, though the move may not be entirely motivated by environmental concern given the escalating price of non-renewable energy and the incumbent effect that is set to have on major industries. Even so, it’s still a very progressive measure whatever the underlying motivation. Here’s hoping some other carriers follow O2’s example.
