Specs War: 3G iPhone v original iPhone

3g-iphone.jpgSo, Apple has unveiled its new 3G iPhone, but how much better is it than the old 2.5G iPhone? There’s only one way to settle it: FIGHT! Oh, sorry, no. The way to settle it is with a nerdy comparison of the stats.SCREEN: No change here: both models have 3.5-inch multi-touch screens, with a 480×320 resolution.SIZE AND WEIGHT: The 3G iPhone is just 2g lighter than its predecessor (133g compared to 135g). It’s the same length and width too, but the 3G model is actually 0.7mm thicker - 12.3mm to 11.6mm.CONNECTIVITY: The 3G iPhone is, well, 3G. Although it also supports faster HSDPA speeds too. Other than that, the two models are identical, with quad-band 2G, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR.BATTERY LIFE: Remember, these are claimed figures. The 3G iPhone offers up to five hours 3G talktime, and 10 hours 2G talktime, while the original iPhone offers 8 hours. Standby time is up to 300 hours for the 3G model, and 250 hours for the original. You’ll get 5 hours 3G surfing and 6 hours Wi-Fi surfing from the 3G model, compared to 6 hours from the first iPhone. Finally, video and music playback are the same for both models - up to 7 hours and 24 hours respectively.OTHER FEATURES: The 3G iPhone will come in 8GB and 16GB models, as did the original model (although there’ll be a choice of black or white if you buy a 16GB 3G iPhone). Both have a two-megapixel camera, although the 3G iPhone’s GPS supports geotagging photos. Oh, and there’s the GPS in the new iPhone, obviously. Although it’s actually Assisted-GPS, which is a slightly different technology.AUDIO FORMATS: There’s no difference: both models support AAC, Protected AAC, MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 1, 2 and 3), Apple Lossless, AIFF and WAV files.VIDEO FORMATS: Likewise, there’s no difference (and the list of formats is so long, you can go here to read it).
