Amid all the hype and hoo-ha surrounding Apple’s 3G iPhone announcement on Monday, it’s good to get some perspective. By which I mean alternate views on whether the device is all it’s cracked up to be. And where better to go than a blog devoted to Google’s Android smartphone platform? Phandroid is the blog, and the title of its post ‘iPhone 3G: Deceitfully Mediocre’ gives you a sense of its standpoint. It’s well worth reading though, since it lays into the device’s $199 price point, claiming that it’s misleading users since they’ll still have to pay $49 for the dock and USB connection (is this true? Crumbs!), and pointing out that you’ll only be able to get the device on a two-year contract. Presumably that’s the US - O2 hasn’t announced details of how long its tariffs will lock you in for here in the UK.Other bugbears include the lack of a better camera (true!), the fact that 3G speeds won’t be what Steve Jobs cracked them up to be (but this applies to all handsets, surely?), and claims that the iPhone will soon be swamped by rival handsets with better features. You might not agree with all their points, but the post is well worth a read if only to counter the wave of ‘OMG! The 3G iPhone is the BEST THING EVER!’ gushing elsewhere online.

sure, there are some good points, and the iPhone has a long way to go. but lets remember a few very important facts. it already exists and people have (at least some form) of it now. there are tons of developers about to launch products for it asap (http://youtube.com/watch?v=irXCMdRprfw) and it is an operating system built for the device, not shoehorned. it may not be the best thing ever, but it might be, soon, and it already has a fair bit of market share.
This site also lays into Apple a little bit, calling the new device “rushed”. BTW, a better Android site for those of you who want to follow it closely. It’s updated a lot more often and it comes in easy to read doses.

Hey guys,
We just want to give you the heads up on our new Android App store - AndSpot - that’s gonna give android publishers the ability to sell their apps and keep most of the profits (>90%). It will also enable android app users and buyers to make app purchases without having to use a Google CheckOut account. They’ll have the option of using PayPal or Credit Cards and later will be able to pay via their phone bills where sign up is not needed.
The really cool thing about AndSpot is that it will allow users to share apps directly from their handsets and for both free apps and paid apps. For paid apps users can share them with their friends and if their friends like the app they can install the app right away and the fee for the app will be charged directly on their phone bills (once we get the mobile payment option going) so that they can use the app instantly without needing any signing up or payment systems getting in between the users and the apps – now that’s cool..
There’s heaps more but then this message will be and advert and not a heads up.
Were inviting android app publishers to sign up and get their apps in the AndSpot store before the store is released to the public in late Jan 09.
We have made available 100 invitations for your readers – they can sign up using the access code: androinica
Check out the site here –> http://www.andspot.com
Thanks…
- denis from the AndSpot team..
