The ROKR E8 was officially launched last night and now Motorola has made good with an announcement that the award winning handset is to get a UK release. Finally the mobile industry’s unluckiest player catches a break.
The phone’s main feature is its unique dual control method, whereby it uses a ‘breakthrough’ technology, dubbed ModeShift by Motorola, which allows you to transform your handset from a music player to a phone at the touch of a button.
This is done via a fancy looking (and it has to be said, classy looking, for Motorola) touch sensitive panel on the front which is illuminated with different controls, depending on which mode is selected. Even more fancy than that is the haptic feedback that the touch sensitive panel provides, which is context sensitive to the buttons displayed at any given time.
The music itself is delivered via Windows Media Player 11 so you can access over 200 online stores worldwide and manage your music from a PC. Other music related features include a built in speaker for bedeviling fellow commuters with, 2GB of internal memory and optional external memory support for up to 4GB.
There is of course a web browser (a full HTML one no less), Bluetooth, a 2 megapixel camera and full media capabilities with an assortment of supported music and video formats. Not a bad quad-band handset then, though the absence of WiFi is a bit of a letdown.
The ROKR E8 is expected to be available from O2 and Orange very soon.
