Something I’ve been wondering since the 3G iPhone was announced is this: what will all the people who bought the first model but want to upgrade do with their first-generation iPhones? Will they all just be thrown away? So I asked O2 how they’re planning to tackle this issue.”The situation with the 2G devices is that customers can hand them down to family or friends,” says Nick Wilkins in O2’s press office. “If the person they give it to is on O2, they can transfer onto an iPhone tariff (so they get unlimited data, Wi-Fi etc) and continue with their existing contract. Or we will be making available an iPhone Pay and Go SIM which can be used in the 2G devices.”That certainly clears it up - and is a welcome surprise, given that those first iPhones would only work on a monthly contract. Quite how the re-registration process will work remains to be seen. But what if you don’t have anyone you want to pass your old iPhone onto? “If they wish to recycle their device, they can bring it into store and use our handset recycling service,” says Wilkins. Good stuff.

LOL!!! Yeah, I’m sure O2 would love people to come in and hand over their “old” iPhones to be recycled because they have nothing better to to with it!
