Even as the resolution and lens quality of phone cameras increases, the actual quality of pictures taken with the average mobile, by the average user, is still lacking.
This shouldn’t be a surprise. Taking good photos is hard and requires some thought to be given to composition and lighting. Professional photographers have access to different lenses, filters & tripods (also, talent) whereas phones cameras lend themselves to the ‘just whip it out and take a snap’ school of photography.
That’s not to say you can’t take decent photos with a decently-specced phone, but just that you shouldn’t be surprised if a lot of pics come out as sub-standard.
Luckily, digital photographs mean you can take advantage of digital processing. VicMan Software’s Mobile Photo Enhancer is a free Windows app that offers an easy way to clean up your pics.
By default the software will attempt to sort out contrast, sharpen the image and reduce noise but each of the filters is user-tweakable. Although a skilled photoshop user can undoubtedly get better results by hand, as a quick drag & drop solution (which also handles batches of pics) it does a pretty reasonable job.
Mobile Photo Enhancer is available here via an email signup - be warned that they will also try to install their photo gallery software unless you tel the installer otherwise.
