Don’t take your mobile to The Open golf tournament

the-open.jpgThe best thing about golf? It’s those BBC adverts shot from the point of view of the ball. After that, the actual coverage can only be a letdown. The sooner proper ballcams are used in television coverage of golf, the better. And they should mic up the golfers, so we can hear them curse like navvies when they shunt a drive off into the water.

Anyway, that’s never going to happen in the lifetime of the blazered blokes who run the big golf courses. What’s more, they’re none too keen on mobile phones either. This week sees the annual Open tournament, which is being held at Royal Birkdale. And they’ve banned phones again.

A proper ban, I mean, not just asking people to turn them off. SMS Text News reports that more than 600 handsets were confiscated at the gates on the first practice day this week. “The message we need to get across is that it’s easier to leave your mobile at home,” says assistant director Johnnie Cole-Hamilton.
