You have to give Nokia some credit. Where a lot of companies make half hearted stabs at greenwashing their business practices, Nokia does seem to be making an earnest effort to both improve its own eco-footprint and to help their customers do likewise.
The latest environmentally friendly app to escape from Nokia’s development team is we:offset. This takes the idea of ‘carbon offsetting’ (mitigating greenhouse gas emissions by coughing up cash every time you take a plane trip, etc.) and makes it something that you can just let your Nokia smartphone handle for you.
The app can detect long trips using a background process that notes the location of your current cell transmitter. Once you turn on your phone after a long flight the app will detect the fact that you are now in, say, New York and work out how much aviation fuel you had to burn to get there. You can also just ask the app to work out the figures manually - so you can tell how damamging a trip will be before you decide to take it.
The app then works out how much you owe the planet in hard cash. For example a round-trip flight for 2 between London Stanstead and Amsterdam Schipolclocks in at0.19 tonnes of CO2. You can offset this bypaying a mere 2 Eurosvia by credit card or paid SMS directly from within the app.
All the money goes to ClimateCare which uses it to fund sustainable energy projects around the world.
