Well, this is pretty much the dictionary definition of ‘mixed blessing’, as anyone who has ever used Lotus Notes will tell you - IBM is launching a Notes web client optimised for the iPhone.
(To be fair to Notes, at least it isn’t Microsoft Exchange)
Lotus Notes has long had a full featured web client called iNotes that pioneered both web-based email/calendering and the use of a lower-case ‘i’ prefix to indicate ‘internettiness’ so in many ways its a match made in heaven. Lotus iNotes Ultralite has been squeezed down to fit the iPhone screen and will apparently feel like a proper iPhone app rather than a web page.
With an always on data tariff, this could make a decent substitute for a Blackberry (which is quite an expensive option if your company runs Notes). And keeping it all web based will mean IBM won’t have to run everything by the App Store mavens and run the risk of having their app killed if it does something Apple don’t like.
