Everyone in the techie blogosphere is getting all in a tizz about the forthcoming Apple event (Tuesday 9th) that will see the unveiling of some new iPods. What we are most interested in however, is whether Jobs (or whoever takes the stage) will use the event as an opportunity to confirm the iPhone 3G’s sales figures.
It’s very possible that Apple could announce sales of more than 4 million of its 3G wonderphones next week, or at least that’s what RBC Capital Markets seems to think. The analyst firm doesn’t stop fortune telling there however. Analyst, Mr Mike Abramsky, is currently making some bold claims about Apple’s potential future plans in the mobile arena.
Abramsky has suggested that a completely new mobile device could be just around the corner, and that he has reason to believe that Apple is looking into the possibilities of an “entry level, low cost (less than $99 subsidized) prepaid iPod/phone” with a stripped down feature set. Anyone one for an iPhone nano?
It’s not a new rumour but it’s interesting to hear such claims from sources more reputable in the technology field than the Daily Mail. At any rate, a calls and iPod only iPhone would certainly make sense for Apple, as at the moment, as wonderful as the iPhone 3G is, its feature set goes way beyond the needs of a significant demographic of mobile users and if Apple wants to snare that crowd, it will have to diversify its portfolio of gadgets.
Don’t expect anything about this on Tuesday mind. Remember, the internet was invented to tease you.
