Sony Ericsson announces G705 slider

Just as things were starting to look really bleak for Sony Ericsson, the company goes ahead and reminds us about the excellent handsets it has a habit for churning out. Hot on the heals of news of the Xperia X1’s release date, Sony Ericsson has gone and officially announced the highly anticipated G705 handset.

The device is an elegant looking slider, with a large 2.4” screen, turbo 3G (HSDPA), WiFi, aGPS and an accelerometer for automatic page orientation between landscape and portrait modes.

It also has a 3.2 megapixel camera with video capabilities, which if course can be used to uploaded directly to blogs etc. including YouTube (via a partnership with Google that will apparently extend to more Sony Ericsson handsets in the future).
Besides that, there is a 1GB memory card included in the box, all of the media playing malarky you could hope for and a built-in FM radio. It certainly sounds like a very respectable mid range phone and it has to be said that the G705 is dressed to kill as far as looks go.

Releasing alongside the G705 will be the G705u, the first Unlicensed Mobile Access or UMA enabled phone from Sony Ericsson. Basically UMA is a clever system that allows you to seamlessly roam between the mobile network and local area networks using both GSM and WiFi. Whether consumers are savvy enough about UMA yet to see it as a major pull factor remains to be seen, but it is encouraging to see Sony Ericsson attempting to lead the charge with a new technology.

The G705u will be exclusive to Orange, which suggests to us that like the Xperia X1, it’s likely that it will be released in Europe before the US. Perhaps that’s just wishful thinking, but we’ll be sure to confirm one way or the other as soon as we know.
