John McCain: war veteran, presidential candidate and, erm, inventor of the Blackberry…?

File this one under, ‘oh really?’. We all know that American election politics tend to get a little circus like towards the end, but this is stretching the definition of the word ‘inventor’ to breaking point.

Apparently McCain, who has been forthright about his inability to send emails, is responsible for the creation of the Blackberry, a device which specializes in push email. At least, that’s the story according to John McCain advisor, Douglas Holtz-Eakin.

When asked what experience John McCain gained as Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee that will help him understand the financial markets, Holtz-Eakin pointed to his Blackberry and said boldly “He did this,”.
He followed through on that with “Telecommunications of the United States is a premier innovation in the past 15 years, comes right through the Commerce committee so you’re looking at the miracle John McCain helped create and that’s what he did.”. Apart from being at least one tense sensitive verb short of grammatically correct, that statement is also almost certainly at least one or two steps short of the truth.

Though RIM is no doubt flattered at having the Blackberry described as a ‘miracle’, we reckon the company might have something to say about who really invented the popular business handset.

On the other hand, maybe it’s all true, in fact, maybe Obama invented the iPhone…
