UK trains get mobile blocking window coating

Yapping mobile addicted sorts can be a bit of a bother when enduring a long daily commute, but with the aid of a few clearly worded signs and maybe even the odd cabin announcement, it’s the sort of social annoyance that’s easily dealt with.

But apparently that’s not a sufficient deterrent and one train company, C2C, is planning new quiet train carriages with the aid of a special window coating that will block mobile phone signals completely. And people wonder where the ‘nanny state’ sound-bite comes from.

The coating, which blocks wifi, radio and phone signals, was developed by U.S scientists for firms that needed to stop outsiders illegally eavesdropping on sensitive internal wireless communications. Applying that sort of tech to stop people from using their phones on trains sounds like a slightly over-designed solution to a relatively simple problem to us.

But then, we do have sympathy for anyone who has had to suffer listening to someone giving blow by blow Jack Bauer-esq updates to their friends and family about the minute to minute specifics of their journey.

This is ridiculous! There are plenty of ways to communicate using a phone that don’t involved talking or otherwise making noise. Have these clowns ever heard of text messages or emails? I find people talking endlessly on trains just as annoying as the next person, but penalising those of use that can communicate noiselessly with our phones is not the solution!
