Analyst firm Informa Telecoms & Media has predicted that the WiMAX mobile broadband technology will have 103 million subscribers by 2013. Not bad, you might think, but Informa also predicts that by the same year, the rival HSPA technology will have more than one billion people using it.
Analyst Mike Roberts notes that WiMAX has gained momentum in the last year, thanks to the launch of services by US mobile operator Sprint Nextel, and the interest of big companies like Google in the technology. The company also reckons WiMAX will be big in emerging markets like India, where it could account for nearly a quarter of all broadband subscribers by 2013.
However, Informa also says WiMAX could face problems in markets where HSDPA has already taken off - that’s the technology used by the USB mobile broadband dongles we’ve been snapping up here in the UK, and it’s part of the wider HSPA standard.
