iPhone developers now able to issue promotional copies of paid apps for free

Great news for those of us in the business of writing about iPhone applications. Apple has finally changed the rules so that developers are now allowed to issue up to 50 promotional codes to whomever they choose, so that the press can more easily get their hands on free review copies of applications and games.

The 50 code limit is also reset every time a new version of the app issued, which makes lots of sense from our point of view. Perviously, the only way for developers to issue promotional copies of applications was via Ad-hoc distributions or gift certificates.

Currently the feature is only available on the American version of iTunes by using the ‘Redeem’ link in the App Store, but hopefully the functionality will make its way over to Europe before very long. So expect to see even more iPhone app postmortems on the pages of Pocket Picks in the future.
