Forget Big Brother, get on Big blogger

I was there: the people's review of 2006Fed up of watching the latest attention-hungry nutcases being transformed into newsworthy (well Heat-worthy) celebrities ?

If so you might be interested to hear about a new project from production company Endemol which is being created around footage sent in from photo journalists via picture sharing site Fotothing. Due to air on prime time on ITV1 in the UK, I was there: the people’s review of 2006 promises to present the big news stories from the perspective of the citizen journalist.

If you’ve got some shots or video of any major events that were reported in the UK press this year, then all you need to do is register for free on Fotothing, upload your images and tag them ‘ITV’. Aside from the obvious attraction of fleeting fame (look mum, my photo is on TV…no not the one of me, the one I took) Endemol will shell out cold hard cash for any images used.

You can see your competition from the submitted entries here.

Whilst you’re about it you might want to double your chances by entering our own citizen journalist photo competition in association with citizen journalist photo agency Scoopt.

Mobile photo competition winners - week 2

Scoopt photo competition graphicJust as the heavens have opened to unleash torrential rain above the Pocket Picks offices, so our mailbox has filled with another deluge of entrants for the second week of our citizen journalism mobile photo competition.

Once again we’ve picked the best three to join last week’s winners in going forward to the final snap showdown at the end of the month for a chance to win a fabulous Nokia N73 phone and the adoration of the Pocket Picks team.

Congratulations to the winners below and to everyone else keep snapping!

Pocket Picks photo competition - you can't park there

1. You can’t park there! - Freddy Boutrot
In their own words: I was in Cyprus last summer and was pleased to discover that Cypriots drive very courteously.
However many of them made a mess of parallel parking; despite several parking manoeuvres during more than fifteen minutes, the sea was the only way out for this car.

Pocket Picks photo competition - slippery roads ahead

2. Caution, slippery roads ahead - Marek Szala
In their own words: This picture shows how the roads look in the Ukraine after a rainfall. I reckon that driving in this country is a real challenge!

Pocket Picks photo competition - police, camera, sun cream

3. Police, Camera, Sun Cream - Mo Elandi
In their own words: I was in Spain sitting on the beach when this police car appeared out of nowhere patrolling the empty beach!

Think you could do better?
If so you still have a couple more weeks to prove it!

First New York plane crash video brought to the world via mobile

New York plane crash image via Treo mobile phoneWednesday’s tragic (but mercifully accidental) plane crash in New York might have done little to for the nerves of the natives in the Upper East Side but according to Reuters it did demonstrate the growing power and influence of mobile phone technology in delivering the news.

Before full TV camera crews had even had time to head out to the scene, Fox News Channel was able to broadcast live video pictures thanks to a hand-held Palm Treo smartphone carried by cameraman Scott Wilder (who had literally run 20 blocks from covering another story) and a software system called CometVision. Using the new system, the footage was beamed across the regular mobile network and straight into the Fox News control room where it was interspersed with the only other video available (from local traffic helicopters) and broadcast live.

Mobile photo competition winners - week 1

Scoopt photo competition graphicLast week we challenged you to send in your mobile snaps in order to win a Nokia N73 and you certainly didn’t disappoint us! We’ve had literally hundreds of entries flying in via SMS and e-mail, hence the slight delay in getting week 1 results up.

Admittedly not all of them quite fulfilled the brief of ‘being of interest to at least 100 people’ and some of the more (ahem) specialist images were unfortunately unprintable (what sort of a site do you think we are?). Nevertheless there were more than enough strong entries to make selecting our first week winners a tough job.
In the end we plumped for a top three, which will all, make it into the final vote in November.

Dump photo - week 1 winner Scoopt/Pocket Picks mobile photo comp 1. Dump - Peter Wooton
In his own words: The photo was taken on the A414, the cross-Herts route which runs from the west of the county and on towards Felixstowe in Suffolk. The sign is in a layby about halfway between Hatfield and Hertford. After leaving Hatfield, the road passes to the south of Welwyn Garden City, up to Hertford and through the farms and green fields of the Herftordshire countryside. About a mile up the road from the layby is a large waste collection site run by the County Council. As I understand it, tv’s and fridge’s are amongst the worst things to dispose of illegally due to the toxins they contain. Someone was obviously too bone idle to go to the official waste site or didn’t want to pay the charge levied by the local authority to collect such items. OK for them but crap for everyone else. Somebody has got to collect and dispose of such waste and the charges for collecting illegally dumped waste will ultimately lead to an increase in council tax. Not only that, it’s just naff to see dumped rubbish all over the place. Once you get beyond the parts of the county that border London, Hertfordshire is very pleasant, so why spoil it. I come from Watford originally and having lived in an urban environment where the gas works once ruled, I appreciate very much the English countryside and get irritated when it’s blighted unnecessarily.

Glacier photo - week 1 winner Scoopt/Pocket Picks mobile photo comp2. Glacier - Sara
In her own words: We recently visited Alaska on a cruise and saw some absolutely extraordinary sights. This picture was taken as we cruised past the Hubbard Glacier and I managed to catch a large chunk of ice falling from the glacier into the water.

Kook photo - week 1 winner Scoopt/Pocket Picks mobile photo comp3. Kook - Olley Talibudeen
In his own words: Hugh Harris, lead guitar of the band ‘The Kooks’. Upset as he wants to spoon eat his mayonnaise in peace.

Think you could do better?
If so you still have until the end of the month to prove it! Check out our competition page for details of how to enter and don’t forget to check back next week for week 2 winners!

Vodafone rocks out at Live Music Awards, Muse voted best live act

Vodafone Live Music AwardsThe Roundhouse in Chalk Farm, London is no stranger to live music, before it closed in 1983 it played host to the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. So it was fitting that Vodafone chose the venue for it’s inaugural Vodafone Live music awards last night.

Whilst most attendees are doubtless still recovering from their hangovers after the raucous star-studded bash (the official site doesn’t even have its report up at the time of writing), we’ve roused in order to let you know that Muse were commended as best live act, U2 as international live act, The Automatic and breakthrough act and Reading/Leeds (co-sponsored by Nokia) scooped festival of the year.
Vodafone Live customers can relive the whole show on their handset to see exactly what they missed right now, but for everyone else, we’ve assembled the full list of winners below.

Another technology channel for mobile TV

TDtv mobile TVFans of acronyms and mobile TV both had cause for celebration today with the announcement that four of the big networks had teamed up to trial the new TDtv platform based around the MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Services) standard.
The technology being tested in Bristol and supported by 3, Orange, Telefonica and Vodafone allows 3G operators to offer bandwidth-heavy services (including mobile TV and audio) without impacting on the core voice network.

In layman’s terms this means that the explosion of mobile TV services has moved from a question of ‘when?’ to ‘which?’ with no less than four technologies currently duking it out over the mobile airwaves. TDtv joins DVB-H (championed by O2/ Arqiva), MediFLO (designed by Qualcomm and supported by BSkyB) and DAB-IP (launched by Virgin Mobile earlier this month).

Whilst this could mean another potentially baffling battle of formats for the average mobile user in the street, Vodafone’s director of R&D Professor Michael Walker believes the proliferation is essential to finding the perfect solution. We like to think he was adjusting an ornate contraption which gave off sparks when saying, “In the case of mobile TV, there are a number of technologies emerging that must be fully explored so that we have a comprehensive understanding of how the technologies work and the experience they will offer. Currently the most interesting technologies are the variants of MBMS and DVB-H.”

Samsung launches 10 megapixel camera phone

Samsung SCH-B600 in actionLast week Kodak announced the death of compact digital cameras and today Samsung hammered another nail into the coffin with the launch of the world’s first 10 megapixel camera phone.

More than a mere megapixel monster, the SCH-B600 includes a 3x optical zoom, 5x digital zoom, auto focus and flash unit along with on-phone editing features; everything in short that you’d expect to find on a standalone compact.

All of which makes it even more annoying that the handset, which was first revealed back in March at CEBIT, is only currently available to the Korean market. Let’s hope we’ll be able to snap it up on these shores soon.
