To “MeYou” to you - viral marketing service claims 1.3m users

meyou.jpgMoConDi, the Italian firm behind viral mobile marketing service MeYou reckons it’s set for substantial growth as it readies a wider European launch.

The company reckons it’s attracted 1.3 million subscribers on 3 and Vodafone in Italy. Good news considering it’s soon launching across Europe and the US.

Basically, MeYou is a recommendation-driven platform that operators can offer through their mobile internet portals to drive traffic among like-minded users, who can send recommendations to each other.

MoConDi has gone on record claiming that 64 percent of its users send recommendations to mates, and 24 percent of these actually result in a purchase of content.

If true, these figures are highly promising for MoConDi. No wonder operators are keen to take it onto their services.

T-Mobile joins forces with Yahoo! to push mobile advertising

yahoonokia.gifThe two companies have signed a strategic partnership to, as they say, “seize the mobile advertising opportunity”.

To us that means T-Mobile Web’n’walk users will be getting graphic adverts when using its mobile internet service. It will carry adverts exclusively sold and served by Yahoo!

The first adverts, which will be targeted to specific users based on already gathered information about them, will arrive in a matter of months.

Of course, both companies have been singing from the rooftops about what a great opportunity this is. It will be interesting to see consumers’ reactions when they’re suddenly bombarded with adverts when using Web’n’walk this summer. They’ll either silently accept it or maybe they’ll stop using it in droves.

We’ll be watching this with interest…

Sony Ericsson’s next Cybershot camera phone with GPS?

sekxxx.jpgSony Ericsson’s spanking new Cybershot phone – the Kxxx – emerges. No, we don’t mean it’s a particularly saucy handset, it’s just that no-one’s quite sure what it’s called.

Anyway, the new handset, which is apparently for real, was unveiled on Chinese website pconline.cn (so maybe it’s a leak from a Sony Ericsson factory?).

What is apparently true is that it looks like a K800-range Cybershot with bright blue casing. It does carry a three-megapixel camera (not five-megapixel?!?) with a dual-LED flash.

So what? We hear you say… a Cybershot phone with no five-megapixel camera? Bear with us. This beauty features a built-in GPS receiver with Google Maps, Favourite Places and more – just like a Nokia N95 8GB.

Imagine – a Cybershot phone which lets you automatically update your location when uploading pictures to your blog!

It might be lacking a top-notch camera, but the GPS certainly is an intriguing addition to Sony Ericsson’s line-up-.

You can see more pictures here.

Toshiba’s threesome – the G910, G710 and G450.

Toshiba’s always struggled to break into the top tier of phone makers but with its three new devices, unveiled a few days ago, it’s showing signs of ambition.

toshiba-portege-g910-italy.jpgThe G910 (right) is a clamshell smartphone looking suspiciously like a Nokia E90, albeit without a keypad on its front. To use it you really do have to open it up. The device itself does Windows Mobile 6 Professional (can you guess who it’s aimed at?), has all the usual quad-band, GPRS, HDSPA and GPS so beloved of smartphones these days. It’s expected Sim-free price is going to be around €600.

toshiba-portege-g710.jpgThe second device, the G710 (right) is another business smartphone looking like a BlackBerry. It too has GPS and Windows Mobile (but only the standard version) and doesn’t have 3G. It does have a 2.4-inch screen though and will be cheaper at €300 Sim-free.

The third, and by no means least phone, is the G450 (below). This is by far the most interesting. It has 3G/HSDPA compatibility, but the tiny device (98×36x16mm) also doubles as a USB modem for computers, a MP3 player and has an OLED display and 160MB of memory. And it’s going to be dead cheap at only €100 Sim-free.

O2 now with (HTC’s) Wings!

htcs730.jpgNo, not Paul McCartney’s old band, O2 has got the latest HTC smartphone – the HTC Wings  - and it’s out now.

The Wings (or HTC S730 to give it it’s product name) is basically an upgrade to the S710 (also on O2). But this doesn’t detract from it being a really attractive device.

The Windows Mobile 6.0 device has a complete suite of Office Mobile applications, letting you read and edit Word, Excel and PDF documents, and from the Live HTC Home screen, gives you instant access to email, calendar, messages and so on.

The slider has a full QWERTY keypad under the screen (as you’d expect from a HTC device these days), so you can type emails and send them quickly via the Wi-Fi/3G/HSDPA connection.

So what else has it got? Well, there’s stereo Bluetooth for relaxing with music when you’re not working, or you can watch videos on the 2.4-inch colour screen.

Devices like this might be a dime a dozen these days, but that doesn’t stop it being highly desirable if you’re a businessman (or woman) on the move…

First pic of Samsung’s 5-mp, touch-screen phone

i900.jpgSamsung’s intriguing new touch screen phone, the i900 has emerged, just in time to get the web buzzing ahead of Mobile World Congress next month, and with a handy watermarked picture courtesy of Italian website Cellularmania.com.

The Windows Mobile 6.1-powered phone has a 3.5-inch screen with a 240×400 display to grubby with your fingertips.

Also included in the quad-band handset are HSDPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (of course), GPS and a FM radio. It’s also believed to have a five-megapixel camera.

Not much else is known about the handset, but intriguingly it’s said to be only 112×56x12.5mm in size, which isn’t much bigger than the screen!

Hopefully we’ll find out more in Barcelona next month!

Momail passes 1,000 mark - for handsets that is, not users!

momail.gifMomail, the mobile email service that aggregates all your email accounts into one inbox on your phone, has passed the 1,000 mark in terms of the handsets it supports.

Examples of the latest Momail-compatible phones are Apple’s iPhone, the LG Viewty, Motorola RAZR V9 and Q9h, Nokia N82 and 8800 Arte, Samsung P520 Armani and Sony Ericsson’s K660i, W380i and W890i.

Currently Momail is available in five Nordic countries, the UK and soon, Germany and Poland. More countries will follow in 2008.

While Momail is certainly a useful and easy to use service, letting you view attachments and featuring its own built-in Spam filter, there is a catch. It is free to download to your phone, but of course you do have to pay for the data downloads of emails delivered to your phone. If you get a lot of emails, you’ll get a lot of data charges.

Compare phone prices before you buy with Phones Limited

phoneslimited.jpgIt’s about time we got an independent price comparison website for mobile phones, and now we’ve got one – courtesy of Phones Limited.

The site is working with over 20 online retailers, dealers and the UK network operators – like likes of The Carphone Warehouse and Vodafone - to compare datafeeds before showing the best deal for any given mobile phone package, including line rental discounts, free gifts and cashback offers.

The system is quite handy because it calculates the overall expenditure over the life of contract, then links direct to the merchant offering the deal.

If this proves a success, then Phones Limited will take the system offline and offer the deals via national press advertising and other media outlets.

The website is already live and available here, so if you’re looking for a cheap online deal you know where to go.

Orange launches £9.99 Alcatel clamshell

alcatel-ot-e227.jpgJust in time to miss Christmas, Orange has released a dirt-cheap Alcatel OT-E227 handset on prepay, costing a mere £9.99 (Plus £10 top-up).

As fits the price, the clamshell handset is pretty functional with a 1.5-inch 65k colour screen, and pretty much no bells and whistles. What it does have is a whopping 325 hours’ standby time and 10 hours’ talktime, and it weighs only 70g.

To attract custom, the handset is nattily decked out with Fuschia (Apparently THE colour this season), glossy black and metallic rose.

Alcatel describes the phone as a “great basic handset for first time mobile users”. They’re not wrong!
