lg u900.jpgVodafone isn’t the only UK network signing up the services of LG’s new five-megapixel handset, the KU990 ‘NYX’. Rival operator 3 has added the phone to its roster with a September launch mooted and a high street appearance scheduled for October.

If you don’t know already, the KU990 is essentially a souped-up Prada phone with a large three-inch touch-screen, five-megapixel snapper with autofocus and Xenon flash, super-fast HSDPA download speeds and the ability to capture video in VGA quality at 120 frames-per-second, unprecedented at mobile phone level. rama nokia.jpgTo coincide with the Holy Month of Ramadan, Nokia has introudced a N73 Special Edition exclusive to the Middle East and North African markets. Apart from sporting a rather fetching new white finish, this N73 is stuffed to the gills with pre-loaded apps to aid Islamic worshipers during this spiritual period.

Pictures of new Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot phone with 3x optical zoom leaked

Cyber-shot.jpg

The guys over at Ubergizmo have got their hands on intriguing photos of what looks like the next high-end Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot phone. Of course they may not be authentic and the images show just the outer shell of the phone but the the most interesting aspect is the lens cap clearly states a 3x optical zoom.

If genuine, this will be the first Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot to carry this type of zoom but the outer husk also hints at a similar design to the five-megapixel K850i Cyber-shot, due for release in the UK around October time. Admittedly there has only been a two UK camera phones with optical zoom thus far, the Sharp 903 on Vodafone and the Nokia N93, but it’s taken a lot longer for Sony Ericsson to produce an optical zoom Cyber-shot model than we anticipated.

Nokia introduces the 6555 luxury 3G clamshell with analogue clock display

01_6555.jpg

Nokia really has stepped up to the design plate with its recent handsets. The 8600 Luna and Prism series phones are testament to the Finnish manufacturer’s newfound creative vim and its latest handset, the 6555, is another elegant and luxiry model to join the likes of the Luna and 8800 Sirocco.

As always, Nokia’s press release is incredible vague so we’re light on feature info. We do know the 6555 is 3G clamshell with a recessed outer hinge that creates a ’seamless line’ when opened and an analogue clock front display that reaffirms its sophisticated manner (coz us plebs need a digital clock to tell the time!)

Elsewhere this quad-band ‘fold’ phone flaunts a QVGA-quality, 16-million colour display, 30MB of internal memory with support from a microSD card slot and a camera with 6x digital zoom. This snapper has yet to be allocated any megapixels but we’re guessing it will be around the two million mark. The 6555 is schedule for release as soon as next month.

Is Fly Mobile set to launch sub £100 slider complete with touch-screen?

SLT100_HO.jpgFly Mobile is a UK based handset manufacturer who are currently tearing up the the Russian and Ukrainian market. Recently Pocket Picks brought you news of its SL600 slider, a £60 prepay handset with a feature set unprecendented at this level and subsequently snapped up by Vodafone. Well if you thought this was a bargain then think again daddio, because Fly Mobile is rumoured to be preparing another sub £100 slider model, this time complete with a touch-screen.

Pocket Picks spotted the SX210 over on the Russian arm of its website and our spies on the ground tell us speculation is rife that Fly Mobile will launch this handset over here in Blighty for around the £70-£80 mark, as the SL100. It looks like another slinky Samsung-inspired slider and apart from the pen-driven QVGA-quality touch-screen, the GPRS-enabled SL100 has a mighty feature set considering the asking the price. This includes a two-megapixel snapper, built-in music player with support for Stereo Bluetooh, FM radio, email capabilities, microSD card slot, WAP browser, TV-out and video playback. You have to admit this line-up is pretty impressive and surely it’s only a matter of time before a UK network has the SL100 on its handset roster.

Serenata billed as successor to Bang & Olufsen’s Serene handset

samsung-f310-bangolufsen-serenata.jpgBack in May Pocket Picks brought you blueprint designs of the sequel to the B&O Serene mobile. It was impossible to tell from the technical drawings what the Serene II design would look like but now, courtesy of some leaked images, we can finally make sense of those diagrams. The follow-up to the original collaboration between Samsung and Bang & Olufsen has been christened the Serenata (or Samsung F310) and it looks like the ‘dream team’ has learnt from its mistakes with the Serene.

Anyone who has the (mis)pleasure of using the Serene will know its a bar steward to operate despite its design being utterly unique. Not only that but its spec was pretty crud too. It appears B&O/ Samsung have ditched the circular keypad and clamshell design but from the picture we can’t tell if the Serenata adopts a slider design or if that’s part of the desktop charging dock. However our source does report a jog wheel and touch-screen for navigation. We’ve also been told that is will be HSDPA (1.8Mbps variety) enabled and pack 4GB of internal memory, so it shows its moved with the times.

Watch footage of a Nokia 6280 handset going up in smoke

1 dot-03(1 dot)1.jpgNews of Nokia recalling 46 million dodgy batteries due to overheating problems reminds us vaguely of a story Mobile Today ran back in March of this year. Dave Crayford, a taxi-driver from Gloucester, witnessed his brand new Nokia 6280 spontaneously combust before his very eyes and after capturing the smoking handset on video he sent the footage to Mobile Today. You can watch the looped footage here. We must stress this is not related in anyway to today’s Nokia product advisory (thanks Doug) and while at the time Nokia claimed it was caused by a damaged battery it was purely a one off incident.

LG KU990 ‘NYX’ multimedia phone set to land this month?

lgku990-leak.jpgPocket Picks has already given you the heads up on LG’s rumoured N95-baiting multimedia device, the KU990 (aka NYX), back in July, but new more concrete reports have emerged stating it could see the light of day as early as the end of August. Mobile Today managed to corner an LG spokesperson and coax this launch date info out of them. It’s still quite vague but at least its straight from the horses mouth so to speak.

The KU990 ‘NYX’ is a five-megapixel toting handsets based on the heavily touch-sensitive Prada KE850 with rumoured video recording capabilities that will trounce the N95. Legend has it the ‘NYX’ can capture at 120fps second in QVGA quality (320×240 pixels) resolution. New infomation gleaned from Mobile Today also suggest it can also playback video in slow motion. As ever Pocket Picks will keep you posted on ay developments, official or otherwise.

Orange grabs ‘pink’ LG Shine exclusive while Nokia 6300 arrives in white and red

nokia white.bmpAnd we thought LG was going down the classy route with the LG Shine KE970 after it recently announced a rather stylish black titanium version. Surely in name of good taste, this classy metal-hewn slider is impervious to the network and manufacturer’s obsession with spray painting top sellling handsets every colour of the rainbow. Is nothing sacred? Obviously not, because Orange in the UK has bagged the exclusive to sell the pink LG Shine from next month. Perhaps we shouldn’t be that surprised because LG did bastardise the gorgeous KG800 Chocolate phone and give it a lick of garish pink paint.

Also in line for a colour makeover is the Nokia 6300. This is one of my handset of the year and you will soon be able to enjoy this slimline candybar in tasteful white (pictured), courtesy of The Carphone Warehouse exclusive and, red, although we’re still not entirely sure which network has won the rights to sell this crimson version.
