The Meffys are one of the mobile industry’s most glitzy awards ceremonies, taking place during the MEM conference every year. It’s next month in Cannes, so organiser the Mobile Entertainment Forum has announced the shortlist for this year’s awards.
Submissions came from 21 countries on four continents, apparently, with expert panels of judges, and a new category - Quality of Experience - which was judged by focus groups of mobile users.
The awards is on 8th May in Cannes (we’ll be reporting live from the event), with the ceremony due to be hosted by TV presenter Suzi Perry. That’s her above. The shortlist follows after the jump.

Just before all of Easter’s festivities kicked off, and we became so overcome by the heroic consumption of chocolate eggs that we lost the ability to move, we were asked by the good folks over at fring to pen a guest piece on a topic of our choosing. The result, ‘Is fring the missing link for mobile online storage services?’ can be read by clicking here. Enjoy!
Just when the upcoming SkyFire seemed to have the mobile browser vapourware market all sewn up, Opera have released a preview video of Opera Mobile 9.5 - and very impressive it looks, too.
The new version brings greatly improved rendering speeds (the video takes great delight in showing how quickly Opera renders the Guardian home page compared to Internet Explorer - accompanied by suitably ponderous music).
Also new is a full-screen display with a hidden GUI activated by tapping a transparent area, smooth zooming and panning across large pages and the ability to send bits of web pages via SMS and MMS.

Opera Mobile
The non-free, windows mobile-native version of the popular mobile web browser produced a great new version this year, adding Flash support, stability fixes
and a host of subtle enhancements to the mobile browsing experience that put Opera so far ahead of the mobile version of Internet Explorer that it is almost embarrassing.

AT&T Chief Operating Officer Randall Stephenson (AT&T is now the rebranded Cingular, Apple’s chosen carrier partner for iPhone in the States) has revealed that while they’re not taking pre-orders for iPhone, they have had over one million inquiries from customers interested in buying the new device.
Speaking at the CTIA mobile trade show in Florida, Stephenson also took the opportunity to give the iPhone its second semi-public viewing… Before an Apple employee whipped the closely guarded handset away again.

Music on your mobile doesn’t have to involve a pricey handset. Alcatel has just unveiled the OT-E801 mobile, a rubberised handset that’s available in black or white, and is aimed at music fans on pay-as-you-go tariffs.
The phone includes MP3-playing software, and comes with a 128MB memory card, capable of holding up to 50 tunes transferred from your PC or Mac. However, if you buy a bigger card, you can have up to 2GB of space for songs. But best of all – if you’re on a budget – is the price. It’ll cost you just £39.99 from Argos, Woolworths, T-Mobile and Orange shops.
Updated 8th June ‘07: Following the dozens of posts we’ve had about this phone, we asked Alcatel for some advice for those of you who are still having problems. To read what Alcatel had to say click here.
Down with iPods! At least, this is the view of the mobile phone makers, who are bringing out dedicated music handsets. Samsung’s X830 is the latest, packing in 1GB of internal memory (enough to hold around 20 albums of normal MP3 files). It’s also got a memory card slot though, so you can store even more music. The phone opens by rotating the screen around, there’s an iPod-esque click-wheel, and a built-in camera too. It’s due on sale by the end of November in a range of colours.
