Dashwire, a web-based phone manager app we first covered back in 2007, lets you manage all your phone’s data - contacts, texts, etc. - over the web.
We were quite impressed with the app but a little disappointed that it was only available for Windows Mobile devices. Dashwire (the company) has just announced that it is launching a version of Dashwire (the client software) for S60 3rd edition phones.
There will be a private beta of the service in November, with a full public launch soon after. Dashwire is currently free, although there may be premium services added down the line.
If you read my earlier post, you’ll know that my iPhone has borked itself for the second time in two days, requiring a complete restore from backup. I published that post at 12.15pm, and the progress bar was right at the start.
Well, it’s 2pm now, and you can see how far it’s progressed in the screencap above. That’s right: 105 minutes and it’s still less than half done. Oh, and every couple of minutes, my PC brings the restore window to the foreground, interrupting whatever task I’m doing in another application.
Nice, eh? This really isn’t what I was hoping for from Apple. Macs are famously crash-proof, but it seems the 3G iPhone is somewhat less so (unless I’ve managed to pick a wrong’un handset, of course). EDIT - it’s now 2pm, and the iPhone is back working again, albeit with three quarters of my apps needing to be synced on again. Hmm.
If you like to keep tabs on your TXTed conversations - either to preserve your badly-spelled musings for posterity or to hide the evidence of an illicit tryst from your better half - this could be for you.
Message Mirror will run quietly in the background on your Symbian S60 3rd Edition phone and make a backup copy of your text messages in it’s own database.
Messages can be searched and exported via Bluetooth, MMS or Infrared.
The messsage archive can be password protected, so you could use it as a way of keeping a secure ‘for your eyes only’ SMS stash if that floats your boat - just delete the originals from your in/outbox and only refer to the copy backed up by Message Mirror.
The freeware version only backs up incoming messages and export to text files. The full version (a mere 8.50 Euros) will archive outgoing messages too as well and allows export as CSV, XML or HTML.
Sprite Software are seeking beta testers for their new SMS archiving software, Sprite Archie.
Archie runs in the background on your Windows Mobile 5 or 6 device and periodically trawls through incoming and outgoing SMS messages and sends an archive to a specified email address.
Archie will also optionally archive your call history, logging the numbers and times of incoming and outgoing calls.
At this point you might be thinking, “Hang on, the CIA and the Freemasons monitor all my calls anyway, why would I want to help them out?” but if you have ever lost a texted address or meeting invite, or think it might be useful to receive an email reminder to follow up a missed call ,then you might want to give it a try.
The beta can be downloaded here, and Sprite are offering free authentication codes to any tester who supplies feedback.
