T-Mobile has thrown the cat among the pigeons by announcing free access to it’s wifi hotspot network to new users of it’s Web ‘n’ Walk data plan.
T-Mobile has the world’s largest hotspot network with some 39,000 access points of which around 1,200 are in the UK.
Pricing starts at £12.50 per month (with a Flext contract) and offers speeds of up to 8 mbps. Users have access to a 3G data connection and can switch to using a wifi hotspot when in range.
No word on how this affects existing users, but you would be rather annoyed if you had just taken out a contract and then spotted this post telling you you should have waited another week. If this applies to you - we are sorry, please don’t blame the messenger.
It looks increasingly like O2 is going to be the network to take on the iPhone in the UK after Chief Executive Peter Erskine commented he was excited about the iPhone and hoped to market it later in the year. You can check out our story here. Mobile Choice has also reported that O2’s broadband service roll out looks to be scheduled for October, a full ten months after the original launch date. The network is hoping to emulate the likes of Orange and Vodafone with a complete mobile / broadband service.
If news of this delay wasn’t bad enough O2 also reported a decline in new customers with only 34,000 added in the second quarter, down 470,000 from the same period last year. Considering Vodafone signed up 236,000 new customers this is quite a shortfall for O2, although it still remains the UK’s largest network in terms of subscribers.
Lastly, after Pocket Picks revealed here that O2 was dumping its i-mode internet service, the network has said it will stop selling i-mode phone immediately but will carrying on supporting the service for the next two years to appease existing customers. That’s your lot from O2.
