Nokia S60 firmware to auto-update over the air

Future Nokia S60 handsets will automatically search for firmware updates and download the required patches themselves, according to Nokia’s Mikko Kuusisto.

Beginning with the Nokia N79, over the air updates will become standard and phones will notify their owners as soon as a software update is available.

Removing the need for a WIndows PC to install the updates will also take Nokia one step closer to the phone being considered the user’s computer. I do have a slight concern about the update process - if you interrupt the usb update it can brick your phone.  Hopefully they will cache the over teh air downloads and prevent any 3G mishaps…

iPhone 2.2 firmware update will revamp Safari browser

Details have emerged of Apple’s upcoming 2.2 software update for the iPhone, thanks to an early build being sent out to developers. It seems one of the key changes will be a revamped Safari browser, although judging by reports so far, it’s more of a retweaking than a full revamp.

According to iPhone Atlas, the search bar now appears next to the URL at the top of the browser. Other than that, it looks pretty much the same - although there may well be some improvements under the hood to make Safari run better.

There’s no news on whether a copy’n'paste function is in the 2.2 software update - something that’s been much requested by iPhone users. What with this being an early developer version, there’s precious little data on when us punters will get our hands on the update either.

iPhone 2.1 firmware available NOW on iTunes

Apple has just released the iPhone 2.1 firmware that was announced earlier this week. It’s available through iTunes now by pressing the ‘Check for Updates’ button on the iPhone summary page, and is a whopping 237.8MB download.

Here’s the full list of bug fixes and improvements:

  • decrease in call set-up failures and call drops
  • significantly improved battery life for most users
  • dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
  • improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
  • faster installation of 3rd party applications
  • fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes if you have lots of 3rd party applications
  • improved performance in text messaging
  • faster loading and searching of contacts
  • improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
  • repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
  • option to wipe data after ten failed passcode atttempts
  • Genius playlist creation
Steve Jobs touted this as a hugely important update for iPhone users, correcting many of the faults that we’ve been complaining about. If you’re a UK reader, I’d grab it now, before the West Coast of the US wakes up and breaks Apple’s servers…

iPhone firmware 2.0.1 pwns the Pwnage Tool

pwn.pngD’oh!  So close.  Anyone brave enough to Jailbreak their 2.0 iPhone using the new Pwnage Tool had better avoid the first 2.0.x firmware update from APple.

Release 2.0.1  ‘re-Jails’ your iPhone or iPod Touch and renders any Jailbroken apps unusable.  This is fairly standard behaviour for Apple and the Jailbreaking community should have a fix pretty soon.

Sadly for those of you waiting to hear if the new iPhone can be unlocked and hitched to a different network, this firmware update will come as even worse news.  Apple has used the update to change the iPhone 3G baseband - effectively moving the goalpostsfor the Pwnage Tool Dev Team and pushing their unlocking code further and further away.

At least we haven’t had any reports of the new firmware actually bricking anyone’s Jailbroken handsets yet, though, which is something.

Apple releases iPhone 2.0.1 firmware to squash bugs

iphone-update.jpgIf you’ve got an iPhone 3G, you’ll be wanting to fire up iTunes sharpish. Why? Apple has released v2.0.1 of the iPhone 2.0 firmware, which promises to fix a bunch of bugs and generally sharpen up the way the handset runs. It’s a sizeable 249.2MB download, which implies just how many bugs there were to fix, given that there are no other significant feature improvements. Early reports claim that the update speeds up syncing and backup - a bugbear for early adopters of the iPhone 3G - while also making the phone run a bit more snappily. To get it, you’ll need to hook your iPhone up to your computer, and hit the Check for Update button in iTunes.

iPhone firmware 1.1.4 released, but no new features

iphone-in-hand1.jpgOkay, so the iPhone SDK wasn’t released yesterday after all, meaning developers are going to have to wait a bit longer to start creating native iPhone apps. However, Apple did quietly release the latest firmware update for iPhone, v1.1.4.

However, don’t get too excited: the update is basically bug fixes rather than new features for the handset. Apple hasn’t said what bugs have been fixed, but it seems Safari may have been tweaked to load multiple pages better, while the known bug with text messages appearing in the wrong order may have been nixed too.

Another theory, though, is that contained within the firmware update is the code required to run third-party iPhone apps when the SDK is eventually released. Good news for those of you with hacked iPhones - v.1.1.4 won’t turn your handset into a brick, either. It’s a 162.1MB file, and can be downloaded from within iTunes, anyway.

iPhone update 1.1.2 will be launched in Europe today

gallery1_20070621.pngApple has confirmed that its version 1.1.2 iPhone firmware update will be released internationally today, in time for new iPhone users in Europe.

According to Pocket-Link, new UK and European iPhone users who sync their devices with iTunes tomorrow in the starts, will be offered the chance to upgrade to the new firmware.

It will do a number of things, namely let UK owners access The Cloud wi-fi hotspots in the UK, and perhaps most controversially stop people using the TIFF exploit used to jailbreak and install third-party applications. There’s also wider language support for international keyboard and special character keys.

What Apple didn’t confirm was whether this update would re-lock any already unlocked iPhones.
