iPhone 3G to get green packaging

apple-video_01-thumb.jpgApple has come under fire before for not being quite as environmentally conscious as it could be, but it looks like Mr Jobs is taking this criticism on the chin and genuinely making strides towards a greener future.

And according to The Register, the iPhone 3G is going to set an example. The new device will be shipped in a potato starch paper tray, which Apple has ordered millions of from a Dutch company called PaperFoam (which according to its site, has had dealings with Apple before as the picture to the right will attest).

Though the PaperFoam’s CEO, Hans Arentsen, doesn’t want to reveal to much, he has confirmed that the iPhone 3G will be delivered in a cardboard box with a potato starch inner tray and all of the packaging will be fully recyclable. Apparently the new packaging will effect a 90 per cent carbon footprint reduction in comparison to plastic as it consists of 100 per cent natural resources.

Not a bad start and with Nokia already having made big moves in this area, hopefully more of the big industry players will follow suit before long.

AMA launches Go Green eco-friendly mobile application

ama-go-green.JPGWant to be a more eco-friendly mobile user? AMA Go Green might help. It’s a new mobile app that aims to show you how to change your lifestyle to help save the planet. This includes an ‘R U Green?’ quiz to find out just how wasteful and disgusting you are (or not), as well as a separate Green IQ quiz to learn all manner of eco-friendly facts, and a pair of mini-games to put a fun spin on environmentalism. You can also share the application with friends, using its text message feature. The app is due out this month, initially in the UK, France and Belgium. Watch for it on an operator portal near you.

Recycled phones still years away says Nokia, but the future is green

mobile-phones_cmyk.jpgThe more environmentally aware among you (which considering the state things are in these days is probably quite a few of you) might like to know that for the next while anyway, recycled phones will not be a reality in high street shops.

According to Nokia, mobile phones made almost entirely of recycled components are still several years away so reports Cellular News. That is not to say that Nokia isn’t keen on the idea however. Speaking at a news conference last week, Nokia’s director of environmental affairs, Markus Terho, stated that “green phones” will become a “competitive factor” in the future.

He also went on to point out that going green is good from a business perspective too and that the company experienced savings of $160 between 2006 and 2007 after the company introduced smaller greener packaging for its devices in 2006. Looks like the future is green then, in the mobile industry at least.

Nokia set to go green green green

blue-smoke-wind-mills.jpgAlthough Nokia has had its name dragged through the mud in Germany somewhat lately, it seems that the savings the company is set to make by seeking cheaper manufacturing might be put to good use.

The company has just announced that it has joined the WWF Climate Savers program as a part of a company wide initiative to improving energy efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions across its business.

Some of the projected targets include halving the stand-by energy used by its handset chargers, switching to green electricity to power 50 per cent of its facilities by 2010 and cutting the overall energy needs of its sites by 6 per cent by 2012. If Nokia can make these projections then it stands to set quite an example for the rest of the industry. Here’s hoping other mobile companies will follow suit.
