Stop speaker interference with homebrew iPhone shield

iphoneshield.jpgAs William Gibson said, “The street finds its own uses for things”.

Quite what was going on along this particular street is anyone’s guess.

If you are as bothered as this guy by the squawking and popping you get from unshielded speakers when your mobile is in use, you too could take an old Red Bull can (diet for preference - it leaves less sticky residue) some carpet tape and TOO MUCH TIME and knock yourself up an iPhone Anti-Interference Shield.

The shield can apparently interfere slightly with your signal (no kidding!) and does require the use of a dock.  Do let us know if you give this a try.  Remember to ask a grown-up to help you.

Quake for S60 3rd Edition handsets

We remember watching a Quake competition on GamesMaster with Dominic Diamond way back when mobile phones (as they are today) were thought of as a future technology comparable with hover-boards and robot assistants. Who would have thought that one day we would be able to play this once top PC spec demanding game on a phone.

A very competent version of the game can now be played on S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 compatible handsets (Nokia N95, Nokia 6120, Nokia 6110) courtesy of the allaboutsymbian forum member, ohinkka. Just goes to show the sort of power that lies under the S60 hood as well as how flexible the Symbian OS can be when clever code-mongers have access to the right tools. Seems like emulated games are enjoying a bit of spotlight time this week. In light of the increased penetration of increasingly powerful handsets, could we be witnessing the beginnings of a lively mobile homebrew scene similar to the one that the PSP enjoys?

Full details about how to get the game up and running on your handset are available on the allaboutsymbian forum. Just to wet your appetite before you get going, here is a video of the game running rather smoothly on a Nokia N95.
