Nokia et al to throw an LTE cat among the Wimax pigeons

ces2006_3_07.jpgThe BBC is reporting that Nokia has signed a deal with Sony Ericsson, NEC and Alacatel-Lucent as part of an ambitious plan to roll out a 4G wireless system. It’s mostly the dry legal stuff about licensing that’s being hammered out just now, as the companies have formed a licensing framework for their 4G patents, called Long Term Evolution (LTE).

More exciting is the fact that the deal will help bolster LTE, which is in direct competition with the Intel backed Wimax standard which is another possible route that 4G connectivity could take. But what exactly is 4G? Well, the easy answer is, it’s 3G but one better. Basically, as far as LTE goes anyway, the new connectivity standard is faster than 3G and capable of long distance wireless tomfoolery (much like Wimax then).

Just in case you forgot, Mozilla wants you to know, Firefox mobile is still coming

firefoxmobile.jpgLooks like Opera might finally have something to be worried about in the mobile browser space. With the forever delayed Firefox mobile browser nearing release, Mozilla’s head of engineering, Christian Sejersen, has been letting fly some choice remarks.

Somebody needs to come in from the side and give everybody a kick. I think the iPhone has done it … but I still think there’s more than can be done to make [browsing] easier.

Now if that ain’t fighting talk, we don’t know what is. One thing is for sure, Mozilla is really going to have to deliver something special to justify the wait for a mobile browser. Happily, it looks as though the company has every intention of shipping something that dazzles and has been working closely with ARM and Intel to get the browser running nice and smoothly on their chips. The wait is almost over folks.

Rough Guides come to Mobile Internet Devices

roughguide.jpgTrekking around the the backwaters of the world and purchasing embarrassing ethnic hats in faraway climes is set to be that much easier with the announcement of Rough Guides Mobile for Intel-based Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs).

Although we haven’t seen many MIDs in the wild, Intel assure us that they will be everywhere in short order, competing with similar handheld devices like the Nokia N810 and Sony Mylo.

Rough Guides Mobile
is an interactive, location-aware version of the popular backpacker’s guidebooks.  It provides information on over 200 cities in 33 European countries.

Users can search  for points of interest and use any GPS functionality available to the MID to access location-appropriate information such as guide books, restaurant and hotel reviews and streetmaps.

The developers, Creativity Software, say that the new app will offer the ability to Geotag photos and link them to your journey as well as submit your own ratings for local attractions.

Intel’s idiotic iPhone

Intel iPhone

Intel iPhone 2

Based on Intel’s new energy-efficient Moorestown mobile platform, this concept for a mobile touch-screen device is basically a stretched iPhone. And is almost totally brainless, unless everyone working at Intel happens to wear trousers with two-foot deep pockets…

…but 24-hour battery life is pretty promising, thanks to the combination of major components onto a single 45nm chip (that’s very, very thin, in case you were wondering).
