Nokia’s Mobile Web Server has always seemed like a solution in search of a problem. Apar from the tiny minority who would want to run an actual website from their phones, there has never been much in the way of killer apps for the tiny S60 web server.
With the release of their new Facebook app “Live Status from my Nokia Phone” (catchy title!) Nokia is hoping that some of Facebook’s social networking mojo might rub off and encourage people to start serving up webs from their pockets.
The app requires the latest Mobile Web Server 1.3 beta for S60 3rd Edition phones. Once that is installed and you have added the Facebook app, visitors to your profile page will be able to send you free text messages using a web form and request live ‘what are you looking at’ images directly from your phone.
Your phone will also provide the app with your current status and availability from your calendar. The data is pulled directly from your device, so any chanegs you make will turn up on Facebook as soon as the app is able to sync.
The usual Facebook privacy clauses apply, as do your mobile roaming data charges - so be aware if you decide to give this a go.
Nokia’s Mobile Web Server is an app that until now had fairly niche appeal - a mini web server that lets you access the contents and services of your phone via a wifi connection.
This may sound a bit like Nokia PC Phone, but where that app ties your phone to a Windows PC, running the server app on your phone makes it accessible from any browser.
Nokia Beta Labs have decided to make the web server even easier to use with My Mobile Site Widgets. Despite its dull name, MMSW is a great looking collection of desktop mini-apps that run as part of the Yahoo! Widgets Engine.
There are widgets to show your phone’s battery level and signal strength; an SMS widget that can read and send messages to your contact list; a drag’n'drop call widget that can accept numbers from anywhere on the desktop and a photo gallery that plucks images directly from your phone’s memory card.
The widgets require a system that can run the Yahoo! Widget Engine (Windows XP, Vista or ac OSX) while the mobile web server has been tested on the Nokia N80, N93 and N95
Nokia’s revolving doors Beta Labs has been very busy this past week with updates for Nokia PC Phone, Nseries PC Suite and Mobile Web Server all going live.
Not only that but the Internet Tablet Video Converter has been updated gaining Vista support, an E61 version of Sports Tracker has been launched and the once withdrawn Conversation is back and presumably tweaked to the max.
As usual all of the apps are free to try so seeing as it’s Friday and you are probably clock watching already now might be a good time to go try some of them out.
