Linkboy UIQ app gets an update

linkboy_14.gifLinkboy – the customisable shortcut app for UIQ smartphones – has just been given an update.

The app works on all UIQ 3 smartphones from Motorola (e.g. the Z8) and Sony Ericsson (e.g. the P990). It’s a cool app which lets you set up as many as 45 shortcuts to frequently used tasks, which are displayed on your smartphone’s standby screen.

For P990 users, they’ll be glad to hear that Linkboy now works perfectly when their device is in Flip Closed mode, making loads of features accessible.

In the new version (1.40), there’s better Activity options for setting up your shortcuts display, linking of shortcuts with numeric buttons and a much faster speed for loading shortcuts to contacts.

You can check out the improvements and download the app here.

Motorola discusses vision for mobile entertainment in 2008

motorizr_z8_phone.jpgPocket Picks was lucky enough to be invited to a special round-table hosted by Motorola this week, featuring some of its senior execs and key content partners.

The purpose was to talk about ‘The Future of Mobile Entertainment’ and how mobile technologies are creating new opportunities for the industry. Among those present were representatives from Motorola itself, EA Games, Universal, Wecomm and Shozu.

The key issue was the current exponential growth in consumers using mobile services and content like picture sharing, downloading games and accessing multimedia content, all because operators and manufacturers started offering one-click access to services.

Think Shozu embedded on a new Motorola handset or Sony Ericsson’s Cybershot, or even operators’ one-click access to their portals. As Andrew Till, Motorola’s Senior Director for Applications and E2E solutions said: ‘Single click access to features makes all the difference.’

But you’re reading this wondering so what? What does it tell me about what to look forward to? Well, according to the panel, the big thing for 2008 is going to be… [drum roll]… ‘User discovered content.’ And what’s this?

HTC launching ‘2-3′ Android handsets next year

oha_main_rgb21.jpgHTC obviously has high hopes for Google’s Android OS if recent claims are to be believed.

The manufacturer has already thrown its hat into the ring by helping develop the first Android handset, the Dream, but this is apparently only the start.

Speaking to Taiwanese analysts, HTC CEO Peter Chou has come out and said his company plans to launch up to three Android-based phones in the coming year, and expect its revenues to rise 20% next year.

Some manufacturers like Samsung and Motorola have already signed up to Google’s Open Handset Alliance, but Nokia is yet to commit fully. HTC’s support will be a fillip to Google’s attempts to break the Windows Mobile-Symbian-UIQ hegemony of mobile OS systems.

He also said that HTC plans to launch new user interface that’s better than TouchFLO and its first WiMAX devices by early 2009.

New leaked pics of the Motorola Z10

Z10

After being mistakenly leaked by O2, then appearing as a few 3D computer-generated 3D images, it’s great to see Motorola’s upcoming Z10 in the flesh, courtesy of IntoMobile. With a 3.2-megapixel camera and running the UIQ OS, the Z10 looks like a nice stablemate for its Z8 little brother.

Motorola demonstrates WiMAX calling, browsing and streaming at 50mph

Moto WIMAX

Motorola is betting heavily on WiMAX, the much-hyped 4G of mobile internet that offers download speeds in the tens of megabits, and has just performed a series of demonstrations in Chicago to prove it. Journalists and analysts were treated to a demo of WiMAX voice-over-IP calling, web browsing, and video streaming as they cruised down the Chicago River, and while driving at ‘beyond 50mph’ alongside it.

Chicago is one of six US cities that Sprint has hired Motorola to build WiMAX networks in, with plans to offer ‘high-speed internet browsing, local and location-centric services, and multimedia services including music, video, TV and on-demand products. Sprint also plans to bring Xohm WiMAX mobile internet customers search, interactive communications and social networking tools through a new mobile portal in a deal announced with Google.’

WiMAX is going to be big, believe us. And if you don’t believe us, ask a Korean — they already have WiMAX’s sister tech, WiBRO, available today.

Motorola’s ROKR W5 leaked pics

ROKR W5

After the rather lurid green and black Z8, Motorola’s new orange and black ROKR W5 seems almost tame in comparison. Word is that it’ll have mini USB and a microSD card slot, but only a 1.3MP camera… Please, Motorola, what is this — 2005?

Leaked pics of Moto’s new U9

U9 1

Fresh pics of Motorola’s upcoming MOTOROKR U9 handset have bubbled up on that there internet. Sized at 90 x 48.6 x 16.4mm and weighing in at 87.5g, the U9 is derived from the existing PEBL line.

Sporting a QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) screen, a 2MP camera sensor, microSD card slot, and — it’s thought — an external OLED display (Cocoon-style), the U9 is to be pitched as a music player. But lacking a 3.5mm headphone jack as it does, it’d better have stereo Bluetooth otherwise it’ll seriously miss the mark. More pics after that there jump.

Transformers: mobiles in disguise

11.jpgWhat is it with Transformers and mobiles just now? It is not like there is a logical reason that the two should be paired (not that we’re complaining mind) but it seems like there isn’t a week goes by when we don’t get a chance to mention them.

The latest excuse comes courtesy of Phone Daily who has come across a clever chap who has managed to turn a Motorola E6 into a very cool looking Transformers toy. We are fairly sure that it doesn’t actually function as a phone, but it is still pretty nifty. Hopefully some folks at Motorola will get wind of this guy’s handiwork and make it happen (unlikely).

If it does, our money is on this evil looking thing being a Decepticon (the baddies are always cooler). More pics after the jump.
