Can the G1 do multitouch?

One of the biggest gripes with the G1’s implementation of Android is the lack of the kind of Multitouch interface that makes the iPhone such a joy to use. The Android OS supports multitouch, so this must just be down to the hardware that HTC used in the G1, right? Right?

Well, apparently not. Android hacker RyeBrye has been fiddling with the drivers for the Synaptics ClearTouch touchscreen used by the G1 and says that it supports multitouch with just a few tweaks and a recompile. The decision to drop multitouch support may have been based on HTC being able to switch to a cheaper/more basic touchscreen at a later date, but it does seem a bit of a daft move.

To prove the point, RyeBrye has put together this youtube clip. Watch, and be amazed…

N95 Multitouch demo (sort of)

You know what would be great?  Multi-touch on the Nokia N95!  Yeah, stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Apple!

And here it is - sort of.  Multitouch is clearly going to be a big ask on the N95, what with it not having a touchscreen and all.

Developer Sittiphol Phanvilai has taken a standard Nokia N95 with a TV out and combined it with a couple of UV lightpens, a large flat-screen monitor, a strip of UV-filtering film and some ninja programming skills.  It’s not the kind of thing you would want to cart around with you but it does show the power of the platform - and that with the right extra hardware Nokia could easily come up with a workable solution.

Here is a video of Sittiphol explaining all :
