Just a quick note to any Nokia fanatics out there to say that it looks like the Nokia N96 might be launching in August. The Carphone Warehouse has the device listed as ‘Coming Soon!’ for August 08, though no tariffs or other details are listed.
The August 08 launch window may be somewhat speculative on The Carphone Warehouse’s part but if that is the case, it certainly isn’t an unreasonable guess. Either way, it looks as though the end of 2008 will be a great time for those either fresh in the market, or with a contract about to expire as not only is the N96 on the way, but Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X1 is due to release around then too.
And there is always that faint hope of a 3G iPhone but perhaps that is a dream too far for 2008.

The Nokia Blog came across a demo of the Nokia N96’s DVB-H Live mobile Tv service in action and were good enough to film it.
It’s low quality and the demonstrator doesn’t seem to realise he is being filmed so the phone is only in shot for 70% of the clip, but it does give a good idea of what Nokia’s new baby can do.
A standard protocol for streaming live TV over IP networks (like the Internet) DVB-H isn’t cleared for use here in the UK as yet, although the service should come to Europe later this year.
Mobile video continues to be big news. With the Viewty’s support for DivX movies, the Nokia N96’s TV streaming and multi-format playback and the ubiquitous multimedia behemoth that is the iPhone, the only thing missing is something to watch.
No less a being than Robert Redford descended on the Mobile World Congress to talk about his solution - short films in bite-sized mobile chunks.
Redford’s nonprofit Sundance Institute is working with mobile operators to bring video ‘content’ to the small(est) screen in a bid to create new outlets for filmaking talent. “There are new forms of storytelling coming,” said Redford “I don’t think we’ve explored all the possibilities yet. The only thing you know will keep going is change. If you can’t ride with it as a wave, you’re out.”
Blue Velvet star Isabella Rossellini was also on hand to promote a series of mobile-targeted short films about ‘insect sex’ entitled Green Porno.
As Nelson from The Simpsons put it after seeing Naked Lunch - “I can find at least two things wrong with that title.”
Okay, so at this relatively early stage (the N96 isn’t released until Q3), this version of Nokia’s latest flagship wasn’t production quality. Frankly it felt rather plasticky and the back had a tendency to fall off. Also someone had stuck a large ‘customisation crystal’ on the top left - something which really confused one punter who tried to have an argument with Nokia staff about the design aberration.
Yet it does look very nice - sort of like a more mass-market N95 hence its rounded form which makes it a little less threatening and masculine. You can find the full specs here, but otherwise just head over the break for more up-close and personal pics.

Ok folks, this is the motherlode, the one we have all been waiting for, Nokia’s new flagship handset. Looking for all the world like a slightly bigger N82 the N96 is a much sleeker looking beast than its predecessor. The slider function has been given a tweak meaning that it is easier to control when playing games.
But the changes are more than just cosmetic with the most notable difference being the inclusion of 16GB of onboard storage. The inclusion of WLAN and HSDPA connectivity is hardly surprising and the addition of Nokia’s Maps application is similarly expected though very welcome, especially in conjunction with the built in aGPS.

This year it seems like the Nokia NSeries devices have been breeding like rabbits. We have the N81, N82, N95, N95 8GB and N73, and now the daddy of them all has emerged – the N96.
Pics have appeared on Flickr, originating from a Chinese source of a real-life, actual N96 handset – apparently not a mock-up or render, but actual pictures.
Jusding by the pictures, the N95 is a dual-slider with a button-less top screen (presumably for touch-screen controls?). It also has a navigation wheel like the N81’s with media controls. The OS is apparently the S60 3rd edition FP2 (i.e. Symbian OS 9.5).
Camera-wise it has a five-megapixel camera with the now ubiquitous (on NSeries at least) Carl Zeiss optics. Interestingly, there’s a stand on the back of the N96 for easier media viewing
There’s no official news on this device yet, but judging by the success of the N95 (and its 8GB incarnation), this could be the big handset of next year.

Pictures have emerged of what could be a Nokia N96, but they could just as easily be concept images of a designer’s wet dream.
The pictures emerged on Todo Symbian and even had specs, but with no more news emerging on the web it doesn’t seem like they’re real. Mind you the specs are interesting.
The touchscreen handset (with joystick navigation) apparently features HSDPA, has an internal memory of 10GB, has a 3.2-inch screen with 16 million colours, has wifi, Bluetooth 2.0, Mini USB 2.0, a full QWERTY keyboard, a 3.5mm headphone jack, four(!) speakers, Digital TV and FM radio.
This all sounds impressive, perhaps too impressive, but the claim that the device has a six-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a ‘motion sensor’ lead us to believe this is a very well conceived fake.
Check out the pics for yourself here.
