Files on Ovi enters public beta

filesovi.jpgNokia’s mobile file sharing service Ovi has released a beta of Files of Ovi - it’s new app that lets you access any file on your PC.

Files on Ovi requires some software -  a ‘connector’ - on your PC.  Currently on Windows XP and Vista are supported, though Ovi have said they wish to support other operating systems in the future.

The connector will share any files or folders on your PC via your broadband connection where they can be accessed via any web enabl ed device (e.g. a PC browser or a mobile).

Accessing files directly from your PC obviously requries your PC to be left on and your broadband link to be up, but Ovi will also allow the creation of ‘Anytime Files’.  These are synchronised copies of your files held on Ovi’s servers.

The free Beta comes with 10GB of storage on a 90 day trial.  In the future, Anytime storage will be a premium service.

Nokia keen to launch browser-based mobile applications

ovi-share.JPGNow this is what I call proper Web 2.0 on mobile. Nokia’s Serena Glover has been talking to MocoNews about the company’s plans for its Ovi services, and this nugget leapt out at me:

“With Ajax on the Web, there’s so much functionality - you can drag and drop and do more all the time. The same thing will happen on the device.”

This is part of a discussion about the way multimedia stuff happens through applications downloaded to your phone right now, rather than directly in the mobile web browser, as they do for PC based users.Glover says Nokia is working to change this, for example by hooking up your handset’s camera directly to the browser “so you don’t have dual experiences”.  It’s intriguing stuff, although it also ties into the debate I just posted about, where including Ajax and other Web 2.0 technologies swells the size of websites, which isn’t always good for mobile browsing.

Share Online graduates from Nokia Beta Labs

capture_08102007_160543.jpgThere’s not a dry eye in the house over at Nokia Beta Labs.  Their little media uploading app, Share Online, is all grown up and ready to make its fortune in the real world.

In the Beta Labs blog, Tommi Vilkamo announced that Share Online will be becoming a fully fledged, non-beta application available from Nokia’s Sharing and Blogging microsite.

Share Onlne, as previously covered by Pocket Picks, is an automated media uploader that lets you send your photos and movies to Flickr and Vox.  The newly released v3.0 also supports Ovi.

Nokia’s N82 cameraphone to beat all cameraphones finally unveiled

n82front.jpgAfter lots of hype and feverish anticipation, Nokia’s N82 has finally had its official unveiling.

It’s being heralded as one of the best ‘if not the best’ cameraphones around, boasting a five-megapixel camera, and the now standard NSeries Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss optics.

It features pretty much the same features as the N95 and others, being a ‘multimedia computer’, but also a ‘navigation device’ courtesy of built-in A-GPS and Nokia Maps.

The N82’s big selling point is the camera. As well as the features above, it has fast camera activation (around two seconds), autofocus (with an assist lamp), quick reloads between shots and ‘DVD-like’ video capture. Hi-res pics and video can then be saved on the 2GB microSD card that’ll come as standard.

If you want to share content, Nokia’s included wi-fi connectivity and one-click uploads to file sharing sites, and the ability to connect the N82 to hi-res TVs.

And this isn’t all - the N82 also has Nokia’s new content-driven 3D multimedia menu, plus Nokia’s Ovi mobile internet services (Nokia Music Store, N-Gage games (well, from December anyway) and Nokia Maps).

It might not look as sexy as the iPhone or even the N95 8GB, but one thing’s for sure, the N82 certainly looks like it’s going to live up to all the hype.

Vodafone opens ‘Ovi’ to Nokia services on its handsets

2006_Vod_Logo.jpgIn what must be a coup for Nokia, Vodafone has agreed to launch an integrated suite of combined Vodafone-Nokia Ovi services on handsets (’Ovi’ means ‘door’ in Finnish). The key is that Vodafone has agreed to carry a number of exclusive Nokia Ovi handsets.

The deal means that Vodafone subscribers will get faster access to Vodafone’s mobile internet services, as well as all of Nokia’s Ovi services. The handsets will have one-click access to the internet services.

As part of this, Vodafone and Nokia will offer direct access to both the operator’s music service and Nokia Music Store on all of Nokia’s 2008 handsets.
