Just after claiming it had sold 15 million KG800 (Chocolate) handsets around the world, LG has unveiled two new colours of the massive-selling handset as xmas gifts – in lilac and silver.
LG claimed last week that the Chocolate had sold 15 million units since it was launched way back in November 2005 in Korea, then in May 2006 in 100 countries around the World. It reckons five million were sold since April alone.
This isn’t bad for a handset that features a 1.3MP camera, a 176×220 pixel screen, and a mere 128MB of storage (and no memory card slot!).
Obviously the Chocolate’s appeal is in the stylish casing and glowing front buttons. Oh, and the range of colours it’s available in, definitely not targeted in a cynical way at getting people to buy different colours to suit their outfits?
If you want one of the new Chocolates, the silver one’s available on prepay from Phones 4u (£49.95), while Carphone’s selling the lilac one on both contract and prepay (£39.95), alongside pink, black and white versions.
JCB, the construction company, is getting tough with a real hard nut of a phone - the Toughphone.
The handset is supposedly shock, dust, water and drop resistant, capable of working in temperatures ranging from -20ºC to 60ºC. It also comes in a hardened rubber case for extra protection.
As well as its protection, the phone also has Bluetooth, Push-To-Talk and is Tri-band, and for those working on noisy building sites it has dual speakers.
People like Nokia have in the past released rubberised handsets, and Samsung’s Solid is coming out next month. Certainly those working in outdoors or on building sites can’t very well use a Nokia N81 or iPhone while on the job.
The JCB Toughphone is manufactured in the US by Sonim and comes with a three-year guarantee.
You can buy the Toughphone in Phones 4u stores, and if you’re in the building trade you can also pick it up at Speedy Hire and Plumb Centres alongside your quarter-inch nipples.

With the iPhone launch about 24 hours away, it seems UK consumers are still getting confused about where they can buy it and think it’ll be widely on sale.
A YouGov survey has shown that a quarter of people still think they can buy an iPhone from Phones 4u. This is despite O2 and The Carphone Warehouse doing their best to get people to buy the iPhone from them.
The survey claimed that 24% of people were thinking of going to Phones 4u and The Link for their iPhone, while others were going to go to Currys (21%), Dixons (22%), even department store John Lewis (19%).
There was one bit of good news though. The number of people telling YouGov it was a ‘high likelihood’ that they would buy an iPhone has risen up 2% to 3% of consumers questioned.
