Not that we know from lots of experience or anything *gulp*, but among the avenues for looking at naughty pictures of women wearing, well, nothing, mobile phones, despite often being used in public, are reasonably discreet. Or at least they are more discreet than casually leafing through a copy of Hustler on the bus while the sweet old lady next to you looks on in disgust.
Anyway, if that sort of thing is your bag then you are going to be in a bit of a quandary over the new Playboy branded mobile phone. Do you buy the device and subtly pay homage to your dirty magazine of choice, or would owning such a device remove all doubt from onlookers that you are a dirty filthy pervert?
Either way the choice is yours now that Playboy has made good with a handset called the OT-V770A or Playboy for snappiness sake. According to HTLounge, the Alactel manufactured device is not the sort of thing that will raise your heartbeat, even if it does have some preloaded naughty pictures on it. Besides its admittedly stylish exterior, the device sports a 1.3 megapixel camera, and 10MB of onboard memory, media player and microSD support - form an orderly queue people.
Not exactly mind blowing, though if it does well, it could be a powerful example of the maxim, “sex sells’.
Congratulations to Amber James, who’s been crowned as Miss Playboy Mobile 2008 at the CTIA mobile industry show in Las Vegas. The 25-year-old from Seattle won a competition run by Playboy to find a new face for its mobile activities, and for her trouble gets $5,000 of moolah and a photo shoot at the Playboy Mansion. Hey, perhaps she can bump off one of Hugh Hefner’s wives while there, and replace them.
Anyway, that’s her on the right, but expect to be seeing more of her soon (*cough*) on a phone near you. Not least because Playboy is ramping up its mobile ambitions, announcing a new iPhone site called iPlayboy, which includes a bunch of exclusive content, including ‘Battle of the Sexiest’, Playboy Radio, and a sex-related blog called Scout.
The company has also relaunched its Playboy Mobile portal for other mobile phones, with a bunch of free videos funded by advertising. It’s a good time to be doing all this - with the US mobile operators gradually relaxing their walled gardens, millions of Americans will soon have unfettered access to the mobile internet - and chances are adult content of one kind or another will be high on their priorities.
Playboy is finally officially coming to European mobiles in its own mobile internet portal, after a deal between itself and MINICK, a mobile portal company.
These days Playboy isn’t quite the exclusive, aspirational brand for sophisticated men that it used to be – now, even seven year old girls can now get pencil cases embossed with the Playboy bunny.
That said, it’s still an iconic brand but has so far not made huge imprints in mobile.
It’s hoping this will change with new video clips, games, mobile TV services and more being offered to European mobile users, who will also apparently be able to watch and participate in Playboy programmes, and interact in social communities. With whom exactly isn’t clear – the Playmates or simply loads of other sweaty-palmed men?
