Polymer Vision rolls out Readius foldable screen technology

mwc_readius_1.jpgOne day screens will be as cheap and flexible as paper, so they tell us. Well, those days remain in the future but Polymer Vision was demonstrating its Readius technology at 2008 Mobile World Congress. It’s still quite limited in the sense that the screen is black and white and low resolution (320 by 240, 16 greyscales) - even though it can deal with web pages, the technology remains an offshot of a glorified eBook project than anything else.
Yet the 3G HSDPA tri-band phone that the screen is attached to does provide enough networking push to make Readius a potentially-useful tool for email and certain news browsing. It’s also very small (115 x 57 x 21mm) considering the 5 inch screen. Battery life is reckoned to be 30 hours continuous reading, while the processor is a 400MHz ARM11. Micro SD cards provide the option when it comes to storage.

Philips’s folding screen phone to launch this year

1348-47952f943a98d1.jpgThe great thing about technology is that just when you think that the zenith point for a particular type of tech has been reached, when you think that boundaries can be pushed no further and that even if they could the results we be far too over designed to be useful, a new fandangled contraption comes along and causes your jaw to descend to previously uncharted depths of awe.

Such is the case with Philips’s new folding-screen phone (developed in part by Polymer Vision). Forget touchscreens, what you want is a five inch foldable screen that wraps neatly around your phone for a slender form factor that the iPhone could only dream of.

Maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration, but the imminent release of Philips long time coming READiUS concept is sure to shake things up in the display department. Although the specs of the phone are still a mystery, it is known that the folding screen will be black and white only.

So basically the first run of this tech will be a bit rubbish but there is promise of bigger, colour variants arriving on handsets in as little as five years. If you simply have to have the first out of the gates however, you need only wait until the middle of this year. Now if only someone could invent a folding colour multi-point touchscreen display with tactile feedback…
