Nokia survey confirms people don’t recycle phones

collectionbox_48x48_c.jpgIt seems mobile users could do with adopting a greener attitude. according to a consumer survey conducted by Nokia. Apparently as little as 3 percent of people bother to recycle their mobile phones and often have mini stockpiles of old handsets lying around just collecting dust.

Of the 6,500 people that took part in the survey that spanned 13 countries (Finland, Germany, Italy, Russia, Sweden, UK, United Arab Emirates, USA, Nigeria, India, China, Indonesia and Brazil), it was discovered that the average number of phones people have bought is five. But 44 percent of those handsets are being kept and not used when they are replaced with a newer model.

O2 confirms Pay and Go iPhone SIM will work in 2G iPhones

iphone-in-hand.jpgSomething I’ve been wondering since the 3G iPhone was announced is this: what will all the people who bought the first model but want to upgrade do with their first-generation iPhones? Will they all just be thrown away? So I asked O2 how they’re planning to tackle this issue.”The situation with the 2G devices is that customers can hand them down to family or friends,” says Nick Wilkins in O2’s press office. “If the person they give it to is on O2, they can transfer onto an iPhone tariff (so they get unlimited data, Wi-Fi etc) and continue with their existing contract. Or we will be making available an iPhone Pay and Go SIM which can be used in the 2G devices.”That certainly clears it up - and is a welcome surprise, given that those first iPhones would only work on a monthly contract. Quite how the re-registration process will work remains to be seen. But what if you don’t have anyone you want to pass your old iPhone onto? “If they wish to recycle their device, they can bring it into store and use our handset recycling service,” says Wilkins. Good stuff.

Two million phones getting dumped this Christmas when they could be recycled

banner_right_top.gifSo what are you going to do with your old mobile when you get your shiny new iPhone or Nokia N95 8GB this Christmas?

According to Tesco Mobile two million of you will simply though your old phone away. Its survey says almost 11 million people expect a new mobile this Christmas, but 20% of them will simply throw their old one away. The most popular option is apparently to simply throw the old phone in a drawer.

Better options would be to sell it on eBay, trade it in for another or recycle it. People like Fonebak offer recycling services via operators and retailers, and some retailers like Carphone will also give you some cash for your old mobile.

Tesco Mobile is jumping on the recycling bandwagon by re-launching its online recycling service, and offering consumers envelopes in stores, aiming to recycle one million handsets.

Tesco Mobile Recycle will recycle any working mobile phone online, offering up to £70 of Tesco Mobile airtime or Tesco gift vouchers in return. Users can also get 300 Green Clubcard Points, or choose to donate £3 to the British Red Cross.
