S60 browsers get a better Google Reader

s60greader.jpgGoogle reader has been my RSS reading weapon of choice ever since Bloglines had one outage too many and I checked out the competition.

There has been a mobile version of the site available for some time,  and Google launched a version optimised for the iPhone ab0ut a month ago. No, Google has modified the standard mobile site to launch an S60-optimised version when used with a S60 web browser.

The site looks great, with some simple icons and well thought out layouts and now makes much better use of the available screen space to get both headline and a decent chunk of text from each post displayed at once.

Streamline your mobile browsing with mDigger

mdigerWe all love browsing the web on our mobiles but unless you have a decent data tariff a couple of prolonged ‘net sessions can leave you with a nasty surprise when you get your bill at the end of the month.

If you must have your net fix, but want to minimize the amount of data you slurp down from your provider, take a look at mDigger.

Billing itself as “The Mobile Internet done right”, mDigger users can create a list of favourite sites from a catalogue on the mDigger website or supply their own list RSS feeds.

mDigger will then grab all the latest info from your list and compress it, ready for download into the client app which runs on Windows Mobile and the iPhone. (There is also an XP & Vista version if you want to try it on a PC with a slow connection)

mDigger claim that browsing in this way is up to 30 times faster than using a typical mobile connection and that you can navigate using 150% fewer keystrokes. mDigger is a free download and the WinMo version comes in two flavours - one for devices with touchscreens and one for those without.

NewsGator Go! RSS reader goes freeware

newsgator go!RSS Newsfeed specialists NewsGator have released their range of RSS reader applications - FeedDemon, NetNewsWire and NewsGator Go! - as freeware.

The first two are for Windows and Mac OS X, respectively but NewsGator Go! runs on Windows Mobile, Blackberry OS 4.0 and Java Mobile so it’s right up our street here at Pocket Picks.

If you have used an RSS reader before you’ll know what to expect - NewsGator pulls down the RSS feeds from your favourite websites and displays the current blog posts, news items, etc.

NewsGator Go! allows one-handed operation (keep your filthy jokes to yourself) and will download both text and streaming media for offline browsing.

If you use any of the other NewsGator products on your desktop, another nice feature is synchronisation between all your readers -if you mark something as read on NewsGator Go! it will be marked as read on your desktop reader as well.

Mobispine - feed reader/blogging tool that can’t spell ‘enjoy’

mobispineMobispine is a ‘mobile media browser’ (read: RSS reader with a few extra functions) for your mobile that claims to help you ‘njoy life on the go’.

Whether this is the same thing as ‘enjoying’ life on the go isn’t immediately clear, but I’m sure they know what they mean. Perhaps the usual spelling of ‘enjoy’ is copyrighted, or something.

Anyway, Mobispine is actually rather good - once you have installed the (Java) client, it will scoot off and fetch cut-down versions of whatever feeds you like. It comes with a load of predefined ones (news, sport, etc) and adding your own is simple enough either on the handset or via the Mobispine website.

The software will download simplified text-only versions of most feeds, which should make it a lot faster (and cheaper) to catch up with your favourite sites.

There are also plug-ins available to integrate with Facebook and Twitter.

Should you wish to inflict you views on the world you can sign up for a Mobispine blog - this lets you upload content (photos, movies, etc) to a personalised page. There is a fair bit of content up there already, albeit mainly in Danish thanks to a recent deal with the Danish arm of mobile carrier 3.

Yahoo! Go, to go

yahoo goYahoo! has released version 2.0 of its Yahoo! Go app for Symbian and Windows Mobile devices.

Although still considered by many to be ‘that other search engine’, Yahoo! has been steadily adding to its portfolio of interesting web apps and Yahoo! Go offers several ‘widgets’ that act as mini portals to your Flickr photos, news & sports, Yahoo! email (is that exclamation point annoying you as well?) and web search functions.

You can also upload photos to Flickr directly from your phone’s memory and a well thought out map widget offers traffic reports, GPS integration and route planning as well as localized search functions (e.g. ‘find the nearest pub to my current location’)

The News widget offers a variety of sources is also a fairly capable RSS reader if you want to add your own.

How useful you find the mail widget will depend greatly on how committed you are to non-Yahoo! email services, but if you are a heavy Flickr user then widget that alone would make this a worthwhile download.
