Sony Ericsson has announced that it is planing to release a first of its kind software solution that will bridge the Abobe Flash Lite and Java ME development platforms. Billed as Project Capuchin, the new tech will make it possible for developers to make use of each platform’s unique strengths when coding ‘content-rich’ mobile applications.
Although this might not mean much unless you are really interested in how the guts of your mobile phone functions, what is interesting is that Project Capuchin will basically allow for Flash Lite content to be lodged in Java ME applications, effectively making content created by Adobe Flash technology appear as Java ME applications. That means lots of apps that make of use of flashy (excuse the unintended pun) graphical flourishes running on the ubiquitous Java platform that almost every mobile phone supports.
Sony Ericsson is hoping to make the technology available later this year which means it will probably be 2009 before we are actually able to buy applications that benefit from Project Capuchin. We’re guessing the platform will be given a snappier name before then; hmmm, Flash, Java - how about Flava? Actually, maybe not.
Sony Ericsson has announced the new G502 and Z780, HSDPA handsets with landscape-mode web browsing, RSS feeds, picture blogging and e-mail access using web mail and Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.
It seems that with both devices Sony Ericsson is going for affordable highly connected web focussed devices. Indeed, the G502 is Sony Ericsson’s cheapest HSDPA phone yet whereas the Z780 clamshell is an aGPS enabled sister handset to the Z770.

As reveals go, this one is pretty skimpy in the details department but at least The Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog has unearthed a few photos to chew over (which can all be seen after the jump).
Codenamed Bei Bei (what is it with Sony Ericsson and daft codenames?), all that is known about the device thus far is that it is a touchscreen Walkman phone with Wi-Fi, an MP3 player (duh) and the flashy new UIQ 3.3. From the pictures it is hard to tell if it is a full touchscreen device or if the Bei Bei has a bottom half making it a clam or a slider.
The screen looks too small for it to be a full touchscreen handset - maybe the person holding the device in the photos just has really big hands. The device does look a bit plasticky too, but seeing as this is a very early leak of the device, there is every chance the shell could change to something a little classier before it is officially announced. As soon as it is, we’ll let you know.

The BBC is reporting that Nokia has signed a deal with Sony Ericsson, NEC and Alacatel-Lucent as part of an ambitious plan to roll out a 4G wireless system. It’s mostly the dry legal stuff about licensing that’s being hammered out just now, as the companies have formed a licensing framework for their 4G patents, called Long Term Evolution (LTE).
More exciting is the fact that the deal will help bolster LTE, which is in direct competition with the Intel backed Wimax standard which is another possible route that 4G connectivity could take. But what exactly is 4G? Well, the easy answer is, it’s 3G but one better. Basically, as far as LTE goes anyway, the new connectivity standard is faster than 3G and capable of long distance wireless tomfoolery (much like Wimax then).

Forget buying music over the air for your phone - it seems the new way to get hold of it is preloaded on the device itself. That’s the latest promotional strategy for Sony Ericsson and Samsung, anyway.
Sony Ericsson is launching a limited-edition Def Jam version of its W910i Walkman handset in partnership with The Carphone Warehouse here in the UK. It comes with external speakers, and features tunes from the likes of Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Ne-Yo and Mariah Carey.
Meanwhile, Samsung has signed a deal with Madonna’s people to preload her new album on its F400 handset. The phone goes on sale in June, and will have ‘Hard Candy’ preloaded, as well as the video for her new single ‘4 Minutes’. However, us Brits will have to jump on a Eurostar to get one - the deal only covers France, seeing as Vodafone has signed a Madge exclusive in other countries.
The Sony Ericsson P5i has become something of a myth, elusive, unicorn-like and as such, the subject of intense speculative tongue wagging. But now the USEB has managed to get hold of some advance details and, lo and behold, a pic of the fabled device (or the Paris as some are calling it) causing Sony Ericsson obsessives the length and breadth of the internet to overheat and faint.
According to the USEB, the phone will be announced in May, with a release planed for as early as September. Not only that but apparently the device will run UIQ 3.3, have a 5 megapixel camera, built in GPS and will run the Opera Mobile 9 browser straight out of the box.
It certainly all sounds believable, but obviously, we aren’t going to be holding our breath until Sony Ericsson quit with the cloak and dagger stuff and fess up with an official press release. Until that fateful day, feast your eyes on the pic on the right.

You may remember that not so long ago we heard a rumor that Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X1 was going to be delayed until 2009. Well it looks like it is time to stop wringing that handkerchief and biting those nails as Sony Ericsson’s Corporate Vice President of Global Communications, Aldo Ligouri, has made good with a statement assuring the good folks at the Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog that the device will definitely be launching this year albeit in the second half.
I can confirm that we will be launching the X1 product in 2nd Half of 2008, as per our announcement of 10th February.
It couldn’t be made much plainer than that. Still, that could be anything up to the 31st of December so don’t go getting all excited just yet.

Sony Ericsson is taking its turn to make some announcements at CeBIT today and has just got the ball rolling with the T303. The device is an attractive compact slider phone featuring a mirrored screen, metal housing and chrome finish.
Besides that the T303 is a decidedly basic offering touting a megapixel camera (that’ll be just the 1 megapixel then) and an FM radio as its two most compelling features. It does come packed with a media player too but we are guessing that storage will be pretty minimal.
So really the focal point for the T303 is its looks which might sound shallow but is a welcome bit of extra thought for a basic handset in our opinion. The T303 will be launched in selected markets in the summertime.
The word round the campfire today is that Sony Ericsson’s recently announced flagship handset, the Xperia X1, might be facing a delay of up to a year. The source of this unconfirmed rumour is the SEMC Blog, which claims to have a table of legitimate release dates for all of Sony Ericsson’s announced new handsets for this year.
The table lists the Xperia X1 as launching on February 10th 2009 which if true could be disastrous for the device. It wouldn’t look good for Sony Ericsson to let its new flagship handset slip that far and considering how quickly the technological landscape evolves in the mobile space, the Xperia might not seem like quite the showstopper is does at the moment in a year’s time.
Some are speculating that perhaps the delay of Windows Mobile 6.1 could be holding back the device but even if that is the case, a full year seems slightly excessive. We’ll surely know more about this by the end of the week so stay tuned to see if this rumour is in fact the awful truth.

What clever marketing from the chaps at Sony Ericsson, which announced its XPERIA X1 (SEX1 - getit?) phone at the start of the week. Still, like the real thing, it’s harder to get your hands on the XPERIA than it is to get satisfaction in a nunnery (we’re guessing). In fact, the only person who allowed to get his hands on is the poor old SE demo guy, who’s now has photos of his digits spread all over the internet.
So after he clocked off for the day, we got these shots. Plenty more after the break.
