Sony Ericsson anounces Z770 clamshell

screenshot_09.jpgThey are coming thick and fast today. Sony Ericsson has announced at the Mobile World Congress the launch of the Z770 clamshell web focused handset.

The device is packing HSDPA connectivity for blisteringly fast web browsing. Not only that but it also has Microsoft Exchange and Google Maps built in making email retrieval and navigation a cinch.

The device only houses a 2.0 megapixel camera but it does have 2.5 x digital zoom as well as picture blogging built in. It seems like a slightly low spec business phone to us more so than anything else. It doesn’t have the media punch to capture the youth crowd who want to be able to check their mail on the move and though Microsoft Exchange support will be enticing for some moderate business users, the absence of a QUERTY could put many more off.

Still, the Z770 is at least a nice looking handset and at 91 grams, is relatively compact too.

Sony Ericsson expands its Cyber-shot range

screenshot_08.jpgSony Ericsson has made plenty of handset announcements so far at the Mobile World Congress with the latest being the addition of two new handsets to the Cyber-shot range.

The C902 has the looks and the C702 (pictured) is the more feature focused of the two which is strange as though it has GPS for location based image storage, a splash and dust resistant shell and one hand picture mode, it only sports a 3.2 megapixel camera.

It’s big brother the C902 is all the more style conscious and though it lacks GPS or the aforementioned one handed camera mode does have a 5 megapixel camera housed in its slender shell. The C902 also boasts a flash, 2.5 x zoom (as opposed to the C702’s 2 x zoom) and face detection.

Neither device is big on connectivity really; both have modem support as well as picture blogging straight out of the box but it is refreshing to see how very focused as camera phones the Cyber-shot brand is becoming as opposed to other ‘do all’ wandsets. Hit the jump for pictures of the C902.

Sony Ericsson unveils the XPERIA X1 convergence phone

screenshot_05.jpgThe leak about Sony Ericsson’s G series of handsets last week seems to have deflected attention away from the company’s real show stopping announcement. Out of nowhere at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Sony Ericsson has unveiled the XPERIA X1 convergence phone.

The device is a has a full three inch VGA touchscreen nestling on top of an arc sliding QUERTY that shimmies out from the side of the device. Not only that but there are various face buttons on the device too designed to make assigning specific controls all the easier.

The device is packing Windows Mobile rather than Symbian and has a full suite of multimedia bells and whistles to make use of its copious interface options. That means the PlayNow music service is built in along with Windows Media Player Mobile, Internet Explorer Mobile an FM radio, video streaming and support for 3D games.

G series Sony Ericsson touchscreen handsets confirmed

screenshot_04.jpgFresh from the Mobile World Congress floor is news that last week’s whispers about Sony Ericsson’s new touchscreen G series handsets were true. The devices are not full touchscreen only efforts and include a full keypad while still remaining relatively compact. In fact Sony Ericsson’s press release contained a thinly veiled stab at a certain handset stating that the G series is “not about technology for the sake of it”. Wonder what Sony Ericsson means by that?

At any rate the devices will each include a 2.4 inch display with a single-touch control menu as well as extensive organizer functions including a touchscreen note taking application. The main differences are that the G700 will have a 3.2 megapixel camera whereas the G900 will have a 5 megapixel snapper with touch auto focus and wifi connectivity.

Essentially this puts the phones in the mid-spec range for 2008 which bodes well for the standard inclusion of touchscreen interfaces in other handsets throughout the year. This is just the start of a very busy week in handset news so stay tuned for plenty more.

Sony Ericsson set to unveil compact touchscreen G series next week?

newsonyericsson_1182190566.jpgAnd here was us thinking that it was Google that was planning on launching a G phone. According to some rumours sweeping the dusty plains of the Internet this morning, Sony Ericsson is set to unveil a new range of handsets at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona next week called the G series.

The G series will apparently consist initially of two handsets, the G700i and the G900i, both of which will be compact touchscreen efforts. The G900i is rumoured to sport WLAN and a 5 megapixel camera whereas the G700i is apparently the scaled down version with no WLAN and a 3.2 megapixel camera.

If these handsets are in fact the real deal our money is on them both packing HSDPA 3G connectivity, solid media credentials and other iPhone baiting features if you catch our drift. The handsets are supposedly making their debut on the 10th of this month and if they do make an appearance in Barcelona next week, we’ll be sure to bring you a full report from the show floor. And before you get all excited that picture to the right is just a fan concept mock-up (and very nice it is too) but it’s nice to dream.

Sony Ericsson patents detachable screen mobile concept

screenshot_015.jpgNow here’s something we haven’t seen before. Sony Ericsson has issued a patent for a mobile phone with a detachable screen. How wonderfully different indeed but really, what is the benefit of such a design?

To be honest, we can’t really think of any one thing that would make this sort of design a killer handset. Maybe the ability to have the screen as some sort of touchscreen MP3 player that can be detached from the rest of the phone might be quite nifty but not really the sort of thing that would make us want one more than say, a W760 or a Nokia N95.

Either we are lacking imagination or this thing really is as pointless as it looks. Our guess is that it is unlikely this thing will ever come to market. We’re humble here are Pocket Picks however, so if any of you brightsparks fancy proving us wrong with your ideas about what this could be used for then we are all ears.

Sony Ericsson gives its PlayNow music service a shot in the arm

playnowlogotextweb1.gifSony Ericsson has revealed the next stage in the evolution of its PlayNow arena mobile music download service. Deals with 10 major record labels have been struck which will add over five million new and mostly DRM-free tracks to the PlayNow arena catalog.

Besides the ten major labels, Sony Ericsson is also planning to snare some regional labels to further deepen its bucket of musical riches. Sounds to us like the service could seriously compete with those sorts of numbers. Hit the jump for a list of the ten record companies that are already onboard.

Sony Ericsson’s next Cybershot camera phone with GPS?

sekxxx.jpgSony Ericsson’s spanking new Cybershot phone – the Kxxx – emerges. No, we don’t mean it’s a particularly saucy handset, it’s just that no-one’s quite sure what it’s called.

Anyway, the new handset, which is apparently for real, was unveiled on Chinese website pconline.cn (so maybe it’s a leak from a Sony Ericsson factory?).

What is apparently true is that it looks like a K800-range Cybershot with bright blue casing. It does carry a three-megapixel camera (not five-megapixel?!?) with a dual-LED flash.

So what? We hear you say… a Cybershot phone with no five-megapixel camera? Bear with us. This beauty features a built-in GPS receiver with Google Maps, Favourite Places and more – just like a Nokia N95 8GB.

Imagine – a Cybershot phone which lets you automatically update your location when uploading pictures to your blog!

It might be lacking a top-notch camera, but the GPS certainly is an intriguing addition to Sony Ericsson’s line-up-.

Web-based phone management? All you need is Bloove

bloove(Well, it was either that or some variant on ‘Bloove is in the heart’, sorry)

Bloove is a web-based app that works with a Symbian S60 or UIQ client to let you manage your phone’s contacts, initiate calls and send SMS messages.  There is also an archival feature that allows you to save old messages and rarely-used contacts to free up space on your phone.

The developers describe it as being ‘Like PC suite for the web’ although a closer match would be Nokia Beta Labs’ PC Phone.

Bloove’s big advantage over PC Phone is that it works using your Internet connection, whereas PC Phone requires a USB or Bluetooth connection and will only work in conjunction with a Windows PC running the Firefox web browser.

Bloove is platform independant and officially supports Internet Explorer, Opera and Firefox (and will probably work with others).

The basic version of Bloove is free but allows only 10 contacts and 100 messages to be archived. There is a (price TBA) upgrade planned that will allow archiving of unlimited contacts and messages.

Sony Ericsson crams everything into new W760 Walkman phone

se-w760.jpgSony Ericsson’s gone new-handset-crazy at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

First up is the W760 Walkman phone with features coming out of its ears, starting with a 3.2-megapixel camera. Music features include stereo speakers, TrackID and SensMe technology to match your music with your mood, and the Active Speaker MAS-100.

It’s not the most exciting the name but the MAS-100 is one of the most intriguing accessories we’ve seen in a long time. It is a protective case for your phone which also includes handy speakers and a FM radio antenna.

It sounds like a cool device, and we haven’t even mentioned the GPS features.  With built-in Wayfinder Navigation (lets you search over 20 million points of interest around the Globe) and Google Maps built-in.

And that’s not all… Continue reading ‘Sony Ericsson crams everything into new W760 Walkman phone’
