Bloomberg mistakenly publishes advance Steve Jobs obituary

steve-jobs.jpgFaking your own death is not a good idea. Profiting from your own demise is highly illegal and generally a bit of a faff, the incumbent admin just isn’t worth it. In Steve Jobs’s case, it’s an even more perilous thing to do, seeing as the stock price per share of his company could slip dramatically if he was to die unexpectedly.

So it’s probably fair to say that Steve Jobs is more than a teensy bit peeved with Bloomberg, as the news site falsely reported his death by printing his obituary yesterday afternoon. Whether this was the mother of all slip ups or simply a mischievous employee looking for a quick notoriety fix is unclear at the moment.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has sent an internal email to his staff amitting that the release of MobileMe could hsve been better planned.

The MobileMe service, a replacement for the Mac.com email system that promised to bring push email to mobile devices like the iPhone has been plagued by problems since its release alongside both the new iPhone 3g and version 2.0 of he iPhone software.

mobileme.jpg“It was a mistake to launch MobileMe at the same time as iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store,” said Jobs “We all had more than enough to do, and MobileMe could have been delayed without consequence.”

Jobs went on to say that although the release as not up to Apple’s “usual standards” that the commpany would learn from its mistakes and presss on with improving the service.

Apple to license iPhone OS to third-party handset manufacturers?

picture-1.pngWhen Steve Jobs announced the iPhone last year, he claimed that he wanted to snaffle 1% of the global market share with the device, a considerable feat, even for an established computing giant like Apple.

But according to an Apple insider (who wishes to remain anonymous), Jobs’ 1% percent projection was merely the beginning. Apparently, Apple is set to allow third-party mobile manufacturers to license the iPhone/iPod touch OS for use on non-Apple handsets. Talk about dropping a bomb on the industry.

Steve Jobs still not sold on Flash for iPhone

steve_jobs.gifiPhone users have been waiting for full Flash support for a while, after all, according to Apple’s winsome adverts the iPhone doesn’t offer a watered down version of the internet, “it’s just the internet”. Quite.

Even so Steve Jobs’ advice seems to be, don’t hold your breath for Flash and in Apple’s shareholder meeting on Tuesday, made comments indicating that architectural limitations in Flash itself are what is holding the tech back.

What are Apple’s iPhone plans for Macworld 2008 this week?

iphone-macworld-expo.jpgIf you’re an Apple-head, the Macworld Expo and Conference is one of the biggest diary dates of the year. Or, to be specific, Steve Jobs’ keynote speech is, since it’s when the company unveils new products, usually putting an end to weeks of fierce speculation. Tomorrow sees the latest Macworld keynote, so what does Steve have planned on the iPhone front?

The jury’s out on whether the 3G iPhone will be announced or not. My instinct is to say it won’t, since if it was, you’d expect it to be going on sale straight away. All indications so far are that it won’t be on sale until later in the year, perhaps with its own launch event, rather than being bundled into a conference keynote.

However, other iPhone Macworld rumours revolve around a beefed-up version of the existing EDGE iPhone, possibly with an expanded internal memory of 16GB or even 32GB. More space for songs, and a way to keep the device in the spotlight while we all wait for the 3G model.

Apple’s Steve Jobs says sorry for cutting the iPhone price — and here’s $100

iPhone 100 bucksOkay, so it is slightly odd that Apple has cut the US retail price of the 8GB iPhone by $200 (£100) only a couple of months of it being launched, and if we’d bought one for $599 we’d be pretty damned annoyed about it.

However, following an outpouring of torment from iPhone early adopters, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has posted an open letter on the company website, offering US owners a $100 (£50) voucher for any purchases from Apple’s online or retail stores. We’re stretched to think of another time a tech company has looked after its customers to this extent — and judging by comments on the MacRumors forums the gesture has gone down well in the US.

…although investors had a bit of a wobble, with Apple’s share price dropping by $1.75 to $135.01 on the news being released. In the long-term, however, we think this can only do Apple’s image good.
